AJ Hinch Wants Javier Baez to Shine in 2024
In the early 2010s, the Detroit Tigers dominated Major League Baseball, but their success dwindled over time. It’s been a while since they reached the playoffs, but with AJ Hinch at the helm, they’re determined to reclaim their glory. The Tigers are gearing up for a pivotal season, and they’re counting on Javier Baez, their talented shortstop, to deliver.
Javier Baez was signed by the Tigers with hopes of him becoming a superstar in Detroit. However, his performance has been lackluster thus far. While he still dazzles with his defensive plays, his offensive struggles have been evident. AJ Hinch recognizes the importance of this year for Baez.
“We need Javi to step up. His offseason has been productive,” Hinch revealed during an interview with Jon Heyman of the New York Post. “We’ve sent coaches and a trainer to Puerto Rico to support him. He’s been diligent with his workouts and looks to be in great shape. I’ll be meeting him in a couple of weeks. He’s been engaged during the offseason. He understands the magnitude of this opportunity. Although he had some rough patches last year, we believe in his talent. We’re expecting a bounce back year from him. Despite the challenges he’s faced, there have been moments in Detroit where he’s been outstanding. We see him as a key contributor to our team, especially with the support of veterans like Mark Canha, as well as promising prospects like Spencer Torkelson, Riley Green, Kerry Carpenter, and Jake Rogers. We don’t need him to be the El Mago he was in Chicago. We just need him to be a solid version of himself.”
The recent addition of Joey Cora to the coaching staff could prove beneficial for both the Tigers and Javier Baez. Cora brings a wealth of experience and expertise, particularly in coaching infielders. Hinch is excited about the impact Cora will have on the team.
“We hired Joey primarily because of his tremendous coaching abilities,” Hinch explained. “He’s a seasoned coach who has achieved success. I appreciate his blend of old-school teachings with a progressive mindset. Sometimes, we mistakenly assume that longtime coaches are set in their ways, but Joey is a perfect blend of both. I’ve been trying to bring Joey Cora on board for years, and it’s great that his relationship with Javi is already strong. He’s direct with players, and I admire his work with infielders throughout his career.”
The Tigers have been on a gradual path to improvement. Last season, they secured a second-place finish in the AL Central, signaling progress. This year, Detroit has its sights set on reclaiming the top spot.
