Taylor Swift Joins Watch Nerd Club with Spectacular Vintage Choker at Grammy Awards
In a stunning fashion statement at the 66th edition of the Grammy Awards, Taylor Swift has officially become a member of the watch nerd club. The pop star may have just sparked a newfound love for traditional watches among her gazillion fans. She did it in the most spectacular way, too, by wearing a vintage piece that was converted into a custom choker, adorned with diamonds and possible secret meanings.
Last November, Rihanna, another trendsetter, turned heads at the Formula One Grand Prix in Las Vegas with a diamond watch anklet by Jacob & Co. Since then, sightings of timepieces used in unconventional ways have become more common. Megan Thee Stallion was spotted wearing a watch ring, and Olivia Rodrigo made a statement with a skirt made out of wristwatches. These are just a couple of the recent and highly publicized examples.
Although Taylor Swift may be a bit late to the game, she certainly knows how to make an impression. At the Grammys 2024, she graced the red carpet in a black and white Schiaparelli outfit, complete with a dramatic slit and layered diamond necklaces for added drama. The highlight of her ensemble was a black watch choker that displayed 12 o’clock sharp when she stepped onto the red carpet in front of the photographers.
The custom piece consisted of an Art Deco-style Concord watch with exploding Arabic numerals and diamonds on the bezel. The choker itself was a creation by Lorraine Schwartz, weighing over 300 carats. Taylor was literally dripping in diamonds.
Concord may not be a familiar name to many watch enthusiasts today, as it fell out of style in the 1990s. However, it was one of the leading luxury brands in the last century, supplying timepieces to renowned names like Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels, and Tiffany & Co. Even U.S. President Harry S. Truman was a fan of Concord watches, personally gifting them to Winston Churchill and Joseph Stalin.
For the special Grammys night, Taylor Swift became a fan of Concord. Her choker timepiece was set at midnight when she walked the red carpet, leading to speculation that it wasn’t functional. However, her eagle-eyed fans quickly debunked these reports with screencaptures showing the hands of the watch moving during the show. This could hint at some kind of countdown for a new Swift release.
Just before the show, Taylor surprised her fans by announcing a new album titled “Tortured Poets Department,” set to release on April 19. The announcement included the phrase “The tick, tick, tick of love bombs,” which may be connected to her watch choker.
Alternatively, the piece could be a nod to her Grammy-nominated album “Midnights” or a reference to the fact that her album “Reputation” dropped at midnight. Taylor Swift is known for her love of Easter eggs, and this diamond watch choker is the mother of all Easter eggs.
