NFL and Entertainment World Mourns the Loss of Beloved Actor Carl Weathers
The world is in mourning as news broke of the passing of the legendary actor Carl Weathers. Known for his iconic role as Apollo Creed in the Rocky saga, Weathers was a respected and beloved figure in both the NFL and entertainment industry. Tributes and heartfelt messages have poured in from some of the biggest names on the planet, paying tribute to the incredible legacy he leaves behind.
One of those paying tribute is former All-Pro linebacker Shawne Merriman, who took to Twitter to share his memories of meeting Weathers. Merriman recalls a time when he was just an unknown, undrafted player training at Golds Gym in Venice Beach. Despite his own anonymity, Weathers reached out and introduced himself, leaving a lasting impression on Merriman. “We kept in touch over the years but one of the nicest, coolest people that was at his level I ever met in my life. RIP my man,” Merriman tweeted.
Weathers’ impact extended beyond his acting career. Many may not know that he also had a brief stint in the NFL, following in the footsteps of fellow actors Terry Crews and others. He attended Long Beach City College before transferring to San Diego State, where he played as a linebacker. Although he went undrafted in 1970, he had the opportunity to play for the then-Oakland Raiders, making eight appearances in the league. He later joined the BC Lions in the CFL, where he showcased his skills and recorded a fumble recovery in 13 appearances over three years.
