Scottie Scheffler emerged as the clear victor in the men’s golf competition at the 2024 Olympic Games in Le Golf National. Despite starting the final round four shots behind Jon Rahm and Xander Schauffele, Scheffler delivered an outstanding performance. He completed the round with a flawless 9-under 62, matching a course record and securing the gold medal.
In an impressive display, Scheffler finished the tournament at 19 under, narrowly defeating Tommy Fleetwood by a single stroke. His exceptional final round included a remarkable back-nine score of 29, the lowest 9-hole score he achieved throughout the year.
Though Rahm initially held a four-shot lead on the back nine, a series of bogeys and a double bogey dashed his chances of claiming the gold medal. Schauffele, the defending gold medalist from the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, also struggled in the latter part of the round.
Hideki Matsuyama, who narrowly missed out on a bronze medal in Tokyo three years ago, found redemption in Paris. He finished the competition at 17 under, securing the bronze medal.
Victor Perez of France provided an exciting moment during the tournament, aside from Scheffler’s outstanding performance. Perez recorded an impressive 8-under score on Sunday, finishing tied for fourth place, just one shot away from the podium.
Scheffler’s gold medal victory adds to the United States’ impressive tally of six all-time golf gold medals and 14 overall golf medals.
