Jessica Pegula is poised to face off against Amanda Anisimova in the championship match of the Montreal Open. This will mark their third encounter on the WTA Tour. After her campaign in Paris, Jessica Pegula began her preparations for the US Open by participating in the Canadian Open. Following easy victories in the previous rounds, the former World No.3 has now advanced to the final where she is scheduled to compete against her fellow countrywoman Amanda Anisimova on August 12th.
Amanda Anisimova opted not to participate in the Olympics and instead chose to compete in the Citi Open, where she reached the quarterfinals. Prior to reaching her first WTA Masters 1000 final, the 22-year-old also defeated several formidable opponents.
The third-seeded Jessica Pegula commenced her run at the Montreal Open by defeating Karolina Pliskova in straight sets during the Round of 32. The American player then secured straight-set victories against her next three opponents.
On the other hand, Amanda Anisimova faced little competition from her first four opponents. She even easily eliminated Belarus’ Aryna Sabalenka in the quarterfinals. However, Anisimova’s compatriot Emma Navarro pushed the match to three sets, but ultimately Anisimova emerged victorious with a score of 6-2, 2-6, 6-2, propelling her to her fourth career final.
Jessica Pegula is aiming to claim her sixth singles title in a WTA tournament and enters the final as the favorite. She currently holds the 6th position in the world rankings, while Amanda Anisimova stands at the 132nd position.
This will be their third career meeting, having previously faced each other at the 2020 Cincinnati Open Round of 32 and the 2024 Charleston Open Round of 32. Pegula emerged as the winner in both encounters, leading their head-to-head meetings 2-0.
During this season, Pegula secured one title at the Berlin Open, defeating Russia’s Anna Kalinskaya in straight sets. The 30-year-old player has also reached the semifinals in multiple tournaments. On the other hand, Anisimova has yet to win a title this season, and the Montreal final marks her first of the season.
