The New England Patriots are reportedly receiving interest from multiple teams looking to trade for Pro Bowl edge-rusher Matthew Judon. If the Patriots were to sign Super Bowl champion Frank Clark, facilitating a deal for Judon could become significantly easier.
According to Alex Ballentine of Bleacher Report, the Patriots could benefit from bolstering their depth on the edge. Ballentine suggests that Clark, a seasoned pass-rusher with a strong track record against the run, would be a solid addition to New England’s defense. Although concerns about Clark’s durability at age 31 are valid, his potential impact when healthy makes him an intriguing option for the Patriots.
Clark’s versatility is a key asset; he has experience generating pressure from multiple positions on the field, having played for the Seattle Seahawks, Kansas City Chiefs, and Denver Broncos. His ability to disrupt offensive lines as both a standup rusher and a traditional defensive end would make him a seamless fit in the Patriots’ hybrid defensive schemes, potentially filling the void left by Judon.
While Clark’s production has seen a decline in recent years, his fundamental skills as a pass-rusher remain strong. His quick burst off the snap, highlighted by Aaron Day of DLineVids in 2022, is just one example of the qualities that could make him valuable to New England. Additionally, Clark’s ability to collapse the pocket from the interior would be crucial, especially with the Patriots facing the loss of star interior lineman Christian Barmore to an indefinite injury.
The Patriots’ pass rush is already poised to take a hit with Barmore’s absence, and trading Judon without securing a capable replacement could further weaken their defense. Judon, currently in the final year of his contract and set to earn $6.5 million, has reportedly attracted significant trade interest due to his ongoing contract stalemate with the team. ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reports that several teams have inquired about trading for the veteran pass rusher, recognizing his value despite his biceps injury that cut his 2023 season short.
Even at 31, Judon remains a proven asset, having recorded double-digit sack numbers in two of the last three seasons. Replacing his production won’t be easy, but the Patriots’ front seven still boasts talent, including Josh Uche, who has excelled in his role, and Anfernee Jennings, known for his strong run defense and ability to set the edge on passing plays.
Adding Frank Clark to this mix would not only maintain pressure on opposing quarterbacks but also potentially pave the way for a valuable trade return for Judon. As the Patriots navigate these roster decisions, Clark’s established track record could provide the stability needed to continue their defensive success.
