Will the SB2K crew members meet the same destiny? In August of last year, Justin Thomas concluded the Wyndham Championship with a rather commendable position at T12, thanks to his 2-under 68 score in the final round. However, it was insufficient as he finished 71st on the season-long FedEx Cup points list.
The outcome? He narrowly missed the cut at the FedEx St. Jude Championship in Memphis since only the top 70 were eligible to participate. But JT made a comeback this year by making the postseason cut. However, it appears that this year, his closest friend, Jordan Spieth, may find himself in a similar situation to what JT faced last season.
Jordan Spieth commenced the 2024 season with a third-place finish at the Sentry in January. However, that was followed by a disappointing T39 finish at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. The 13-time PGA Tour winner was disqualified from the Genesis Invitational for incorrectly marking the scorecard. Spieth missed the cut in six out of the 20 events he participated in this year.
In addition, he only managed to secure three finishes within the top 10 (at the WM Phoenix Open and the Valero Texas Open). As a result, his ranking on the FedEx points list has dropped to 63. There is a chance that Jordan Spieth will qualify for the playoffs if he maintains his current performance.
However, the truth is that he is teetering on the edge. If he experiences another missed cut or if any of the players trailing behind him have an exceptional week, his dreams of making it to the playoffs will be dashed. Interestingly, another member of the SB2K group is also facing difficulties!
While Justin Thomas will be participating in the Greensboro tournament for the first time since 2020 and Jordan Spieth still has a glimmer of hope, Rickie Fowler will have to wait for his dreams to come true. Like Spieth, he has missed the cut in six events, but his other appearances have not been successful.
He has not achieved any top-10 finishes and has only managed two top-25 finishes. His best performance was at the RBC Heritage, where he finished T18 with a score of 9-under. Due to a disappointing 2024 season, he is currently ranked 104 on the FedEx list, rendering him ineligible for the playoffs!
