In a chilling statement, German intelligence chief Bruno Kahl warned during an October 9 parliamentary hearing that Russia may be capable of launching a direct attack on NATO by 2030. As the war in Ukraine continues to stretch Russia’s resources, the Federal Intelligence Service (BND) believes Moscow is rebuilding its military with an eye on Europe. Kahl emphasized that Russia’s actions, including increased espionage and sabotage, suggest it is preparing for the possibility of conflict with NATO.
Adding to the gravity, Thomas Haldenwang, head of Germany’s Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution, highlighted a surge in Russian covert activities, including spying on critical infrastructure and attempts at sabotage. The H-6K bomber and YJ-21 missiles over Taiwan are just part of a broader, aggressive stance. For Germany, a key NATO member and Ukraine’s ally, this points to a growing threat that could destabilize not just Europe but also the United States, which would inevitably be pulled into any NATO conflict.
With espionage on the rise and Russian military modernization efforts underway, NATO must urgently bolster its defenses to prepare for what could be a dangerous escalation.
