The Washington Commanders shocked many when they chose Dan Quinn as their new head coach instead of Eric Bieniemy, their offensive coordinator this season. Ron Rivera, their previous head coach, was fired after a disappointing 4-13 season. Unfortunately for Bieniemy, Quinn will not be retaining him, leaving him currently unemployed. This decision has left former NFL quarterback Robert Griffin III and former Cowboys star wide receiver Dez Bryant baffled. Bryant even tweeted “Crazy” in response to the news.
Before joining the Commanders, Bieniemy was the offensive coordinator for the Kansas City Chiefs. Under his leadership, the Chiefs consistently had one of the best offenses in the league. They even won two Super Bowls during his tenure, which only increased the desire of Commanders fans to see him as their head coach.
With all the head coaching vacancies now filled in the NFL, Bieniemy will have to either accept an assistant coaching role or sit out the 2024 season. The Commanders, under new ownership, have a fresh start and the No. 2 pick in the upcoming draft, which they will likely use on a quarterback.
Bieniemy finds himself in a small group of highly regarded head coaching candidates who are currently without a job, including former Tennessee Titans head coach Mike Vrabel and coaching legend Bill Belichick. Perhaps in the future, there will be a coaching vacancy that will be enticing to one of these talented individuals.
