Deshaun Watson’s 2024 season has fallen far short of the Cleveland Browns’ expectations, with the team languishing at the bottom of the AFC North at 1-5. After committing $230 million in guaranteed money to Watson, the Browns’ gamble has yet to pay off. Head coach Kevin Stefanski, however, isn’t ready to bench his struggling quarterback despite Watson’s underwhelming stats and the team’s poor performance.
Following a close 20-16 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, Stefanski expressed continued confidence in Watson, making it clear he won’t be turning to backup Jameis Winston anytime soon. The Browns, currently ranking dead last in total offense with an average of 239.4 yards per game, have been unable to find a rhythm in the passing game, averaging just 142.8 yards through the air. Watson has put up just 1,020 yards, 5 touchdowns, and 3 interceptions through six games, and his QBR sits at a league-low 21.5, even dipping into single digits in some games.
Despite these struggles, Watson’s issues go beyond individual performance. Cleveland’s offensive line, among the worst in the NFL, has allowed Watson to be sacked 31 times this season—the highest in the league. Under constant pressure, Watson has struggled to find open receivers before being brought down by opposing linemen.
Given the offensive line woes, Stefanski’s hesitation to replace Watson is understandable; Jameis Winston might face the same problems behind the struggling line. Until the Browns address these issues in the trenches, any quarterback will face an uphill battle.
For now, Stefanski is sticking with Watson, but fans and analysts alike are questioning how long the Browns can afford to wait for their $230 million quarterback to turn things around.
