Kamala Harris, Democratic presidential nominee, took aim at Donald Trump for spreading misinformation about the Biden administration’s response to Hurricanes Milton and Helene during a rally in North Carolina. Though she didn’t mention Trump by name, Harris addressed the “lies” about government aid in the aftermath of the hurricanes, which devastated parts of the Southeast, including Florida, Georgia, and the Carolinas.
Speaking to supporters at the Koinonia Christian Centre, Harris highlighted the community spirit of those helping storm victims and contrasted it with others who, as she put it, are “not acting in the spirit of community.” Her message was clear: “The problem with [the misinformation] is it’s making it harder to get people life-saving information if they’re led to believe they cannot trust.”
Trump’s claims, which included the assertion that Washington withheld hurricane relief from Republicans and exhausted FEMA funds on immigration aid, have been repeatedly debunked. Nevertheless, the former president continued to criticize the White House’s efforts, labeling the administration’s response “absolutely terrible” on Fox News.
While Harris rallied in North Carolina, President Joe Biden was on the ground in Florida to assess hurricane damage, expressing gratitude that Hurricane Milton was less severe than expected, though it still left “cataclysmic” damage for many, including those who lost cherished possessions. “In moments like this, we come together to take care of each other, not as Democrats or Republicans, but as Americans,” Biden said, acknowledging the hard work of first responders from both the U.S. and Canada.
With just over three weeks left until the November 5 election, the latest CNN poll shows a tight race, with Harris at 50% and Trump close behind at 47%.
