Vancouver Canucks eyeing Hughes brothers reunion

The Vancouver Canucks find themselves at a pivotal crossroads as they contemplate an opportunity to fulfill their captain Quinn Hughes’ longstanding wish to play alongside his brothers. Earlier this year, discussions ignited among fans regarding the potential for the Hughes brothers to unite on the same NHL team. With both Luke and Jack Hughes currently part of the New Jersey Devils, speculation swirled about Quinn possibly leaving Vancouver to join them. However, a surprising twist in the saga has opened a door for the Canucks.

Luke Hughes’ Contract Standoff

Luke Hughes, the youngest of the three siblings, is currently embroiled in a contract standoff with the Devils, making him a restricted free agent (RFA). His absence from New Jersey’s training camp this season has raised eyebrows and questions about his future. Should this holdout persist, the Devils may face a situation where trading Luke becomes their most viable option. While it may seem unlikely, the evolving circumstances could create a unique opportunity for the Canucks to bring another Hughes brother into the fold.

The Allure of a Trade

The prospect of a trade hinges on the Canucks’ willingness to negotiate with the Devils. Vancouver could be motivated to make a move, especially given the potential ramifications of losing Quinn Hughes to free agency. With Jack Hughes signed in New Jersey until 2030, it appears more feasible for Quinn to wait two years to join his brothers rather than attempt to bring them to Vancouver. However, Luke’s current contract impasse could shift that narrative.

If the Canucks were able to acquire Luke Hughes, it would significantly bolster their chances of retaining Quinn long-term. Having one brother already on the team would likely make Quinn more inclined to sign a contract extension. The focus would then shift to attracting Jack Hughes to Vancouver, completing the Hughes trifecta.

Jack Hughes’ Contract Situation

Jack Hughes remains under contract until the end of the 2025-26 season, after which he will gain a 10-team no-trade clause. This gives the Devils a final year of flexibility to move him wherever they see fit before the trade protections kick in. The key question remains: would Vancouver be on Jack’s no-trade list? The answer is unlikely, particularly if both his brothers are already on the roster.

If Luke successfully makes the move to Vancouver, it’s conceivable that Jack might exert some influence on the Devils to facilitate a trade to join them. While he wouldn’t resort to ultimatums, the desire to reunite with his brothers could play a significant role in his decision-making.

A Complex Situation for the Devils

The Devils find themselves in a challenging position. If Hughes’ agent, Pat Brisson, applies pressure on general manager Tom Fitzgerald, the team’s options might become limited. The alignment of circumstances appears to be favoring the Hughes brothers’ reunion, creating a compelling narrative for the Canucks and their fanbase.

While pursuing Luke Hughes may involve a hefty price for the Canucks, the potential rewards could be immense. The dream of uniting the Hughes brothers not only captures the imagination of fans but also promises to reshape the landscape of the Canucks’ roster for years to come.
