San Jose Sharks eye trade for Maple Leafs’ goal-getter Nick Robertson

The Toronto Maple Leafs are shaping their roster as the new season approaches. Max Domi has settled into an intriguing role as the third member of the top line alongside stars Auston Matthews and Matthew Knies. Meanwhile, Easton Cowan is making a name for himself on a fourth line that is beginning to contribute secondary scoring. However, amidst this positive momentum, some high-priced forwards find themselves on the trading block, including Calle Jarnkrok, David Kampf, and notably, Nick Robertson.

Emerging Trade Interest in Nick Robertson

A recent report from Cam Robinson of Elite Prospects has shed light on the potential trade landscape surrounding Robertson. On September 29, Robinson noted that “Nick Robertson remains a name to watch on the trade front,” indicating that multiple teams from the Western Conference, including the San Jose Sharks, are interested in acquiring the young forward.

Drafted by the Maple Leafs in 2019 with the 53rd overall pick, the 24-year-old Robertson stands 5-foot-9 and weighs 178 pounds. Last season, he put up 22 points in 69 games, averaging a career-high 12 minutes of ice time per game.

San Jose Sharks: A Suitable Destination

The Sharks are in the midst of a rebuilding phase, having brought in several veterans over the past two summers. Integrating a young talent like Robertson into their lineup could provide an additional spark. Moreover, San Jose has the financial flexibility to pursue a deal, with $9.12 million in available cap space according to PuckPedia.

Previous Links to Other Teams

In early August, NHL insider Elliotte Friedman suggested a potential connection between Robertson and the Pittsburgh Penguins during an episode of the 32 Thoughts Podcast. He noted that Kyle Dubas, the Penguins’ general manager, is familiar with Robertson’s abilities. “They got the arbitration settled on Saturday at $1.825 million. They’ve got to clear some bodies there; they’ve got a lot of them,” Friedman remarked, alluding to the crowded roster situation in Pittsburgh.

The Maple Leafs are currently juggling more NHL contracts than they can manage. Amid inevitable injuries throughout the season, it’s likely that they will lose a player to waivers if they don’t make a trade. By trading someone like Robertson, they could recoup valuable assets rather than losing a player for nothing.

Robertson’s Skill Set and Potential

Robertson’s work ethic and scoring ability make him an attractive option for many teams looking to bolster their rosters. After a recent preseason game, head coach Craig Berube praised Robertson’s performance, stating, “He’s a worker…that can shoot the puck in the net, and that’s what he did tonight.” Berube highlighted the young forward’s competitiveness and determination on the ice.

Analyst Justin Bourne also spoke highly of Robertson’s potential, noting, “Robertson is a guy who is going to get 20-25 goals in the league. I believe he can do that.” This ability to score is a highly valued trait in the NHL, and if Robertson can consistently find the back of the net, he is poised for a successful career.

For the Sharks, or any team that might pursue a trade for Robertson, the opportunity presents a low-risk, high-reward scenario. Adding a player with his goal-scoring prowess could significantly impact their future success.
