Rangers weigh Conor Sheary’s future as training camp decisions loom amid roster crunch and depth strategy

Rangers Evaluate Conor Sheary’s Role as Training Camp Decisions Approach

As the New York Rangers approach the conclusion of their training camp, the time has come to make crucial decisions regarding their roster. Among the players under consideration is Conor Sheary, who joined the team on a professional tryout (PTO) with hopes of reviving his NHL career. Brought in late in the offseason, Sheary has made a compelling case for a spot on the team, leaving the coaching staff with a significant decision to make.

Sheary’s Impressive Camp Performance

Sheary’s performance during camp has caught the eye of the coaching staff, especially head coach Mike Sullivan, who knows him well from their time together. This familiarity fosters a level of trust that could be pivotal as the Rangers finalize their roster. Sheary’s ability to deliver in various game situations could lead to a consistent role if he earns a place on the team.

The question now looms: could Sheary’s inclusion come at the expense of other candidates like Juuso Parssinen or Taylor Raddysh? While the Rangers’ fourth line appears set with Adam Edstrom, Sam Carrick, and Matt Rempe, Sheary may not fit into that role, which typically sees limited ice time. Instead, the 33-year-old forward could slot into a more impactful position on the third line, contingent on other roster decisions.

Roster Dynamics and Tough Choices

If Gabe Perreault secures a spot on the team, the Rangers will face a tough choice regarding Parssinen or Raddysh. Given Parssinen’s role as a center, Raddysh may find himself on the outside looking in. Alternatively, there’s a possibility that Sheary could serve as the 13th forward, a role that seems increasingly likely as camp progresses.

It’s important to consider the implications of exposing players like Parssinen to waivers, as losing a valuable asset for nothing could be detrimental. Retaining Sheary as a 13th forward may offer a strategic advantage while allowing younger prospects such as Brett Berard, Noah Laba, and Brennan Othmann the chance to develop in the AHL.

Navigating the Waiver Wire and Roster Depth

Jonny Brodzinski also enters the conversation, as sending him down would require him to clear waivers. There’s a strong possibility he could get through, allowing the Rangers to keep him as a 13th or 14th forward. However, the team’s depth will be crucial this season, especially given the demanding schedule that necessitates utilizing a larger roster to maintain competitiveness.

The Rangers recognize the importance of depth and have various options that could play significant roles throughout the long season. The presence of capable players like Sheary means the team can address injuries or performance issues without scrambling for solutions.

As the final cuts approach across the league, Rangers fans should remain vigilant. The waiver wire could present opportunities to bolster the roster with additional depth, ensuring that the Blue Shirts are prepared for the challenges that lie ahead.
