Montreal mourns a legend as Ken Dryden passes

Ken Dryden, the iconic goaltender for the Montreal Canadiens and a celebrated figure in Canadian sports, passed away on September 5 after a courageous battle with cancer. He was 78 years old.

A storied hockey career

Dryden’s legacy is etched in the annals of hockey history. His impressive accolades include six Stanley Cup championships and five Vezina Trophies, affirming his status as one of the greatest goaltenders of all time. He also claimed the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP and won the Calder Trophy, awarded to the league’s best rookie, in his inaugural season. His remarkable contributions to the sport earned him a well-deserved induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1983, just four years after he hung up his skates.

A life beyond the rink

Beyond his illustrious hockey career, Dryden ventured into academia, obtaining a law degree from McGill University in Montreal. He later became a professor, demonstrating his passion for education. His commitment to public service saw him elected to the Canadian Parliament in 2004, where he served until 2011, including a term as the Minister of Social Development.

An author with a voice

Dryden was also a prolific author, penning 19 books that spanned topics from hockey to politics and education. His insights and reflections resonated with readers, further solidifying his influence as a thinker and commentator on various societal issues.

Tributes pour in

The news of his passing prompted a wave of tributes, including a heartfelt message from Prime Minister Mark Carney. In a post shared on social media, Carney expressed his deep sadness over the loss of Dryden, calling him a “Canadian hockey legend and hall of famer, public servant and inspiration.” He highlighted Dryden’s remarkable achievements, from his six Stanley Cup championships to his dedicated service in Parliament.

Ken Dryden’s impact on hockey, politics, and literature will be felt for generations to come, as Montreal and the wider Canadian community reflect on the life of this remarkable individual.
