Montreal dreams of Malkin mentorship magic Habs eye Russian star to guide rising talent Demidov in potential summer swoop

Date:

Montreal Pursues Malkin for Mentorship Role

As the Montreal Canadiens navigated the summer months in search of center depth, the team explored a variety of options. Despite the numerous names floated in trade discussions, none found their way to Montreal. Recent reports, however, suggest that the Canadiens had their sights set on a tantalizing target: Pittsburgh Penguins’ Russian superstar, Evgeni Malkin.

Interest in Malkin

A report from RG Media on September 20 revealed that the Canadiens were among the teams investigating the possibility of acquiring Malkin. The primary motivation for Montreal’s interest lies in the potential mentorship Malkin could provide to burgeoning Russian talent, Ivan Demidov. James Murphy, citing an anonymous source, noted that both the Tampa Bay Lightning and Florida Panthers also expressed interest in the 39-year-old center, but the Penguins’ general manager, Kyle Dubas, has firmly dismissed any notion of a trade.

According to the source, Dubas has taken a respectful approach to the situation, allowing Malkin and fellow Penguins star Sidney Crosby to influence the team’s direction. “When it comes to Dubas, he really has done a great job of leaving this up to Sid and Malkin,” the source remarked. “He respects their standing in team and league history, and he’s letting them dictate where this goes.”

Crosby and Malkin’s Future

The ongoing narrative this offseason centers around Crosby and Malkin’s potential decisions regarding their future with Pittsburgh. Crosby remains under contract for two more seasons, while Malkin will be a free agent at the conclusion of the current season. Reports indicate that the Penguins have already declined to offer Malkin an extension, leading to speculation about his future. Although Malkin has not publicly announced his intention to retire, that outcome appears increasingly likely.

Yet, there remains a glimmer of hope that Malkin could explore opportunities with other teams next summer.

Malkin’s Role Beyond Scoring

While Malkin’s days as a prolific 100-point scorer are behind him, his value to a team extends far beyond statistical output. The Canadiens envision Malkin as a crucial asset—not just for his experience but also for his potential to guide younger players. Ivan Demidov stands out as a prime candidate for Malkin’s mentorship. As a Russian player, Demidov could greatly benefit from Malkin’s deep understanding of what it takes to thrive in the NHL.

Malkin’s experience could provide Demidov with essential insights into adjusting to the North American game, making this mentorship an integral part of the Canadiens’ strategy.

Timing the Potential Acquisition

Given the current landscape, the Canadiens may find it more advantageous to wait until summer to pursue Malkin. With the Penguins showing reluctance to trade him during the season, the Canadiens could secure his services as a free agent without giving up any assets. This approach would likely allow Montreal to sign Malkin to a contract that is manageable within their salary cap structure.

Moreover, joining the Canadiens could offer Malkin a chance to exit his career on a high note. The Penguins are facing the prospect of a rebuild, which could diminish Malkin’s potential to compete for championships in the twilight of his career. In contrast, the Canadiens might provide a more appealing environment for him to make a meaningful impact and conclude his storied career positively.
