Max Domi eyes top-line spot with Maple Leafs but must shoot more to fill Mitch Marner’s skates

Max Domi aims for top-line role with Maple Leafs as he seeks to fill Mitch Marner’s void

The Toronto Maple Leafs are facing a significant challenge as they look to fill the first-line right winger position left vacant by Mitch Marner. Among the candidates eyeing the role is Max Domi, who has the potential to play alongside stars Auston Matthews and Matthew Knies during training camp.

Domi’s Shooting Dilemma

Maple Leafs coach Craig Berube has made it clear that for Domi to secure this coveted spot, a shift in his approach is necessary—particularly in his willingness to shoot the puck more often. This was a notable issue for Domi last season.

“Yeah, definitely. I think he’s a guy that’s played with Matthews in the past and had success. He looks for (Matthews) and gets him the puck, and that’s important,” Berube remarked. “I think that Max could work (there). It could work. But I think Max has to change just his mindset a little bit, playing with those guys on a consistent basis.”

The coach emphasized that Domi’s game needs to evolve. It’s crucial for him to recognize that he cannot solely focus on facilitating plays for Matthews; he must also embrace his own scoring potential. “It’s not always about looking for (Matthews) and finding (Matthews). It’s about Max, him shooting pucks, scoring goals and being that type of player,” Berube added.

Training Camp Opportunities

Despite the constructive criticism, Domi will have the opportunity to showcase his skills during training camp. “Yeah, for sure. I think they’re all gonna get a look, I really do,” Berube stated, emphasizing the open competition for the top line.

Domi is entering the second year of a four-year, $15 million contract, and expectations are high for his performance. Beyond just shooting more, Berube is urging Domi to establish himself in the crease and engage physically.

“Just being more direct. Yes, he has the ability to make the plays and we need him to do that. But also, he’s gotta take his looks and finish, and just be a more interior player,” Berube explained. “That’s what I call it. Getting to the inside more, being a more interior player. Just being a more direct player. And using his skating ability. He’s a powerful skater, and I find when Max is skating, he’s a very good player. It’s when he’s not moving his feet.”

Performance Metrics

Last season was a lackluster one for Domi in terms of scoring. He managed to net just 8 goals while adding 25 assists, totaling 33 points in 74 games. Berube is eager to see a change in this area as the upcoming season approaches.

Despite the loss of Marner, the Maple Leafs have bolstered their roster, adding depth to the forward position. Heading into camp, a plethora of forwards are vying for roster spots—a situation Berube views as beneficial.

“There’s a lot of competition at camp. I’ll leave it at that. There’s a lot of competition at camp, which is great. I think it makes for a competitive camp and that’s what we want, because that’s gonna get us more prepared for the regular season,” Berube noted.

With the Maple Leafs set to play their first preseason game on September 21 and the season opener scheduled for October 8 against the Montreal Canadiens, Domi has a critical opportunity ahead of him. As he works to fill Marner’s skates, all eyes will be on him to see if he can rise to the occasion.
