Maple Leafs consider Roslovic option as training camp approaches
The Toronto Maple Leafs are on the verge of starting training camp, and their roster could still see some changes. After a focused offseason aimed at enhancing depth, the Maple Leafs are reportedly interested in Jack Roslovic, a player who has generated considerable intrigue among analysts.
Depth and Potential
NHL insider Kevin McGran of the Toronto Star has suggested that the Maple Leafs should take a chance on Roslovic, viewing him as a potential wild card. “Yes, I’ll agree the Leafs have more depth. Their fourth line should be as good as many third lines, big and able to score a bit,” McGran noted. However, he acknowledges the risks associated with Roslovic, indicating that adding him could displace an existing player from the roster.
The speculation hinges on whether the Maple Leafs could secure Roslovic for less than $2 million on a one-year deal. “If the price is right, they might bite. Otherwise, they’ll go with what they have,” he added.
Recent Performance
Roslovic comes off a solid season with the Carolina Hurricanes, where he tallied 22 goals and 17 assists over 81 games. While his playoff performance was less impressive, his ability to contribute offensively when in form could make him a valuable addition to Toronto’s top-six forwards. The Maple Leafs are eyeing secondary scoring options, and if Roslovic can be signed affordably, he may well be worth the gamble.
Revamped Roster
Despite losing star player Mitch Marner this offseason, the Maple Leafs have bolstered their roster with several new faces, including Nic Roy, Dakota Joshua, Mattias Maccelli, and Michael Pezzetta. This revamped bottom-six aims to make Toronto a more formidable opponent. Coach Craig Berube has expressed optimism about the team’s depth, emphasizing the different skill sets newcomers bring.
“Listen, he touched all areas of the game for us — penalty kill, power play, five on five. He’s a guy that’s hard to replace. You’re not replacing him,” Berube remarked. “But we brought in three new players — Roy, Joshua, and Maccelli, all sort of different types of players — but I feel like we’re probably a deeper team, bringing in the three guys. We talk about replacing Mitch; that’s not what we’re trying to do. We’re just trying to improve our team in other ways by adding these players.”
Future Moves on the Horizon
While securing another forward may seem unlikely given Toronto’s current roster depth, general manager Brad Treliving has not ruled out the possibility of further adjustments. With potential trade options including David Kampf, Calle Jarnkrok, and Nick Robertson, Treliving remains open to making moves if necessary.
“We’re always looking. I don’t think you ever stop. Whether it happens or not, we’ll see. We’ve got a lot of bodies right now, so we’ll see. More than likely, unless something changes, we’ll go with what we’ve got and see where it all sorts itself out,” he stated.
With nearly $2 million in cap space, the Maple Leafs are in a position to be flexible as they finalize their roster ahead of the upcoming season.
