NHL insider Chris Johnston recently shed light on the Maple Leafs’ openness to exploring trades involving Robertson, emphasizing that the team is looking for fair value in return. On his show, Johnston noted, “One thing in Toronto is the cupboards relatively bare because they’ve been a trade deadline buyer for season, after season, after season. I think they’re in a position to be open-minded about the return.” This indicates a shift in strategy as the franchise looks to recalibrate its assets.

Robertson, a second-round pick in the 2019 NHL Draft, has shown flashes of potential but has also struggled to secure a consistent spot in the lineup. Despite signing a one-year, $1.825 million extension this offseason while still being a restricted free agent, his future in Toronto could be uncertain. His performance stats from last season included 15 goals and 7 assists across 69 games, but his status as a healthy scratch during critical moments—particularly in the playoffs—has raised questions about his fit within the squad.

Competition for Roster Spots

As training camp approaches, the competition for roster positions intensifies. Maple Leafs coach Craig Berube commented on the situation, stating, “There’s a lot of competition at camp. I’ll leave it at that. There’s jobs available and again, it’s a competition. You gotta come in and play your ass off and earn a spot.” This highlights the pressure not only on Robertson but on the entire forward group as they vie for limited spots.

The uncertainty surrounding Robertson’s place on the team could make him an appealing target for other franchises looking to bolster their own rosters with young talent. Given his potential and the right deal, Toronto might consider moving him to create space for a more established player or to acquire valuable draft picks.

Maple Leafs’ Future Prospects

In addition to the forward shuffle, the Maple Leafs are actively evaluating their overall roster ahead of the preseason. With nearly $2 million in cap space, the team remains open to making additional moves. General manager Brad Treliving remarked, “We’re always looking. I don’t think you ever stop. Whether it happens or not, we’ll see.” This suggests a proactive approach as the organization aims to enhance its competitiveness for the upcoming season.

As the Maple Leafs prepare to open their season against the Montreal Canadiens on October 8, the dynamics of their forward lineup remain fluid.
