Maple Leafs Face Uncertainty as Goalie Joseph Woll Takes Leave

The Toronto Maple Leafs are entering the new season with an unexpected challenge as goalie Joseph Woll has taken a leave of absence due to a personal family matter. Woll, who was anticipated to vie for the starting position alongside Anthony Stolarz, now leaves the team in a precarious situation as they prepare for the upcoming games.

General Manager’s Support and Uncertainty

Maple Leafs general manager Brad Treliving has publicly expressed support for Woll during this difficult time, emphasizing that the team is fully behind him. “For right now, Joe’s not available to us. We’re there to support him and do everything we can, and we certainly expect him back,” Treliving shared on Real Kyper & Bourne. However, he also acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding Woll’s return, noting that there is currently no timeline.

This absence raises questions about how long Woll might be away from the ice. NHL insider Chris Johnston confirmed the lack of a definitive return date, leaving Toronto unsure if Woll will miss any games or an extended period.

Coaching Support and Team Dynamics

Coach Craig Berube echoed Treliving’s sentiments, stating the organization is committed to supporting Woll. “It’s obviously a tough situation for him. We’re all here to support him and do what we can to help. That’s really it—he needs to do what he needs to do,” Berube remarked. The camaraderie within the team is evident, as both players and coaching staff rally around Woll during this challenging time.

Woll’s Impact and Potential Alternatives

Woll, who recently signed a three-year, $11 million contract, has faced injury challenges throughout his career but was poised to seize the starting role this season. In the previous season, he posted a record of 27-14-1, with a 2.73 goals-against average (GAA) and a .909 save percentage. During the playoffs, he struggled slightly with a 3.56 GAA and .896 save percentage, but his potential remains evident.

With Woll’s absence, Treliving has not dismissed the possibility of acquiring another goalie. Given Stolarz’s own injury history, the need for depth in the crease has become even more pressing. “You’re always looking at ways to get better,” he stated. “Whether a player was taking a leave or not, we’re constantly asking if there’s another option that can best support us.”

Emerging Talent: Dennis Hildeby

In light of Woll’s situation, Dennis Hildeby may step into a more prominent role. Treliving has expressed confidence in Hildeby, who is likely to be the starting goalie for the Toronto Marlies in the AHL. His performance during training camp has impressed the management. “This was kind of his time for me,” Treliving explained. “He’s had two years now over in North America, he’s shown at times he can be spectacular in the American Hockey League, and he’s had a really good camp thus far.”

Berube also noted Hildeby’s development, highlighting his ability to track the puck and handle the pressure around the net. “He was good, I thought he tracked the puck well, made the saves,” Berube said. “But down in tight around the net, there were a lot of scramble plays, and he was pretty solid covering the net.” Last season, Hildeby appeared in six games, finishing with a record of 3-3, a 3.33 GAA, and a .878 save percentage.

As the Maple Leafs navigate this uncertain landscape, the focus will be on how they manage their goaltending situation and whether Woll will return in time to make an impact this season. The depth and resilience of the team will be tested, but there are signs that new opportunities may arise in Toronto’s crease.
