Kevin Labanc makes a surprising shift to KHL after unsuccessful Hurricanes tryout
The Carolina Hurricanes provided a chance this preseason for a once-promising winger to revive his career. However, the opportunity for Kevin Labanc did not materialize, leading him to make a significant career move. The 29-year-old has officially signed with the Shanghai Dragons, the only KHL team based in China, marking his exit from the NHL altogether.
Labanc, who was drafted in the sixth round by the San Jose Sharks in 2014, initially showcased his potential with a breakout season in his third year, tallying 56 points. Yet, following that promising campaign, his performance took a nosedive. The following season saw him drop to just 33 points, and injuries—including a dislocated shoulder—hampered his contributions in subsequent years.
After the Sharks opted to part ways with Labanc, he joined the Columbus Blue Jackets last season. His time there was limited, as he played only 34 games and managed to score 12 points while averaging just over ten minutes on the ice per game. A shoulder surgery in February ultimately cut his season short, leaving him searching for a fresh start.
This summer, Labanc’s prospects dwindled to offers primarily from the KHL, with CSKA Moscow reportedly showing interest as well. In a bid to re-establish himself in the NHL, he participated in a tryout with the Hurricanes but was unable to secure a spot on the roster.
In a twist of fate, Labanc will now play under former NHL head coach Gerard Gallant with the Dragons. As he approaches his 30th birthday in December, returning to the NHL may prove challenging for Labanc. However, if he can find success in the KHL, there may still be an avenue for another opportunity next summer.
The shift to the KHL not only alters Labanc’s trajectory but also highlights the ever-changing landscape of professional hockey, where players constantly navigate the highs and lows of their careers.
