Easton Cowan sets sights on Maple Leafs roster as training camp approaches
The Toronto Maple Leafs are gearing up for training camp, and with several roster spots up for grabs, all eyes are on Easton Cowan. The highly-touted forward prospect, who narrowly missed the team two years ago at just 18, now finds himself with a genuine opportunity to secure a spot in light of Mitch Marner’s departure.
Cowan’s Path to the NHL
Cowan’s journey has been marked by significant growth since he was drafted 28th overall in the 2023 NHL Draft. After two successful seasons in the OHL, where he played a pivotal role in leading the London Knights to a Memorial Cup victory, Cowan is eager to make his mark in the NHL.
Yet, the transition from junior hockey to the professional level is not without its challenges. Maple Leafs coach Craig Berube has emphasized that Cowan needs to adapt his game to stand out in a competitive environment.
“Cowan came into junior as a relentless forechecker,” Berube noted. “He developed into a high-end player, but now he needs to tap into that early mentality. We need him to play a simple, north game and be a difficult opponent—defensively responsible and smart with the puck.”
The Road Ahead for Cowan
Cowan is aware of the adjustments required to earn his place on the roster. Berube’s call for a more simplified style of play is not lost on him. “He’s got to change a little bit, because junior is different than pro,” Berube added, acknowledging Cowan’s potential while outlining the expectations ahead.
Cowan has been proactive in his preparation, dedicating his summer to building strength and enhancing his skills. “I’ve put in the work this summer. Now, it’s just about going out there and proving I can play,” he stated, expressing a newfound confidence in his abilities.
Mindset and Motivation
The pressure to perform is palpable, but Cowan sees it as a motivating factor. “My mindset right now is to make the Toronto Maple Leafs,” he declared. “We’re at an NHL camp, and that’s my focus until further notice. I feel the most confident I’ve ever been—faster, stronger, bigger.”
Cowan’s offensive prowess could be a game-changer for the Maple Leafs, but he must demonstrate that he can elevate his performance above the current roster. His selection was considered a surprise by many experts, who had projected him as a potential second-round pick. However, Cowan has proven his worth, emerging as a top prospect within the organization.
Support from Management
Acknowledging the support he has received from the Maple Leafs’ management has played an integral role in Cowan’s development. “Management does a great job staying in touch with me throughout the year,” he noted. “Everyone has been positive, which helps me maintain a positive mindset.”
As the Maple Leafs prepare to kick off their preseason against the Ottawa Senators on September 21, Cowan is poised to showcase his skills. With the upcoming training camp being critical for his aspirations, the young forward is ready to seize the moment and make a strong case for his place on the team.
