Easton Cowan claims a surprise seat on Maple Leafs’ roster as Toronto eyes Atlantic Division glory

Easton Cowan secures a spot on Maple Leafs’ roster as Toronto aims for Atlantic Division success

The Toronto Maple Leafs are finalizing their roster ahead of what promises to be an exciting season. In an intense competition at the forward position, Easton Cowan has claimed a surprising spot on the team. Competing against established players like Nick Robertson, David Kampf, and Calle Jarnkrok, Cowan’s ascent to the roster reflects both his talent and potential.

Cowan’s Unexpected Rise

Analyst Luke Fox has expressed confidence in Cowan’s performance, stating that he appears to have nabbed the final forward position. “Only 12 forwards can dress for the Toronto Maple Leafs on opening night, and it sure looks like the kid has grabbed the last seat on the bus,” Fox noted. The 20-year-old, who was drafted 28th overall by Toronto in 2023, has shown remarkable adaptability, transitioning his high-scoring junior style to fit in as a fourth-liner alongside fellow OHL alumni Steven Lorentz and Scott Laughton.

This development is noteworthy, as many anticipated that the Maple Leafs would opt for a more seasoned player in that role. Cowan, however, seems unfazed by the prospect of starting on the fourth line. “It’s something you could do here as well,” he remarked. “Start in the bottom six and you can always work your way up. Whether I’m in the bottom six or top six, I can bring something to the table, whether that’s finishing checks, power play, or penalty kill. I’m a good overall player and can play anywhere in the lineup.”

Praise from the Coaching Staff

Cowan’s performance during training camp and preseason has not gone unnoticed. Maple Leafs coach Craig Berube praised his efforts, emphasizing that Cowan has fought hard for his position. “Cowan has come in and done a really good job of fighting for a spot — and so have our other guys,” Berube stated. “There’s nobody that we’re disappointed in. It’s just decisions that we’re going to have to make: What’s the best fit for our team and what gives us the best opportunity to win games?”

Despite the daunting challenge of adjusting to a new role, Berube encourages Cowan to focus on his game. “Just stay consistent in what you’re doing,” he advised. “I get it. He’s used to scoring and making plays and getting points. That doesn’t always happen right away. It takes time for that to happen. And I’m not too worried about that. I’m more focused on the type of game he’s playing. He’s doing a good job for us right now.”

Looking Ahead

As the Maple Leafs prepare to kick off their season against the Montreal Canadiens on October 8, Cowan’s emergence is a promising sign for the team. With his roster spot likely secured, the Maple Leafs are shaping up for a challenging campaign. Analysts currently rate Toronto with the second-best odds of capturing the Atlantic Division title, setting the stage for an exciting season ahead.

The projected opening night lineup is beginning to take form, and with Cowan’s inclusion, the Maple Leafs’ depth could play a crucial role in their quest for glory. As the team gears up for the season, all eyes will be on Cowan to see how he adapts to his new role and contributes to Toronto’s ambitions.
