Carter Hart seeks new beginnings in the NHL, dismissing returns to Edmonton or Philadelphia

The fallout from the recent disciplinary actions against five players from Team Canada’s 2018 World Junior team, acquitted of sexual assault charges, has ignited discussions about potential NHL returns. Among those in the spotlight is Carter Hart, the former goaltender for the Philadelphia Flyers, who once stood out as one of hockey’s most promising young talents.

A Promising Career Stalled

Hart, a former second-round pick (48th overall) in the NHL Draft, had been on a trajectory toward stardom before the controversies surrounding him emerged. The Sherwood Park, Alberta native was considered an elite prospect, but his journey took an unexpected turn. As the speculation swirls around his future, Hart remains the focal point of interest for many teams.

Link to Edmonton and Philadelphia

In recent months, Hart has been heavily linked to the Edmonton Oilers, as well as the Flyers, who have struggled mightily in the goaltending department since his departure. Both franchises appear to offer promising opportunities for Hart to reclaim his status as a number one goaltender. Yet, according to TSN insider Chris Johnston, the chances of a return to either team are slim.

Looking Beyond Past Connections

Johnston reported that Hart is expected to finalize a new contract by October 1, although it won’t be registered with the NHL until October 15. The young goalkeeper’s priorities are clear: he seeks a team that provides a solid opportunity for meaningful playing time and the chance to compete for wins. This desire for a fresh start effectively rules out a return to Philadelphia, where he previously faced challenges.

U.S. Market Appears Likely

Reportedly, Hart is leaning towards signing with a U.S.-based team. Johnston noted that the idea of him returning to his hometown Oilers, once a popular speculation among fans and media, is now off the table. The fit simply doesn’t align for either Hart or Edmonton, making the prospect of him joining a team south of the border increasingly likely.

Carter Hart’s next chapter in the NHL remains uncertain, but what is clear is his determination to find a situation that rekindles his career and places him on a path to success. As the clock ticks down to the start of the season, all eyes will be on where he lands.
