Cale Makar supports return to traditional playoff format as Avalanche aim for Stanley Cup resurgence
Cale Makar and the Colorado Avalanche have established themselves as a formidable force in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, making appearances for eight consecutive years. Over the past six seasons, with Makar anchoring the defense, the team claimed the coveted Stanley Cup in the 2022-23 season. However, the past three years have been less kind to the Avalanche, as they managed to win only one playoff round, suffering first-round exits twice during that stretch.
Makar’s Take on Playoff Format
While the team’s struggles in the postseason can’t be solely attributed to the playoff format, Makar has voiced his discontent with the divisional and wild-card seeding system implemented in 2013-14. At the recent NHL Player Media Tour, he expressed his preference for a return to the traditional one-through-eight conference matchups, a sentiment shared by many players.
“I feel like all the players want back to 1 to 8. I think that’s a thing that we’d like, but I get it. I understand the playoff format now. It makes the road harder sometimes,” Makar stated.
His comments reflect the challenges faced by teams like the Avalanche, who, despite their talent, encounter tough matchups against elite opponents right from the start. “I mean, if you’re from Edmonton or L.A., I’d say so, yeah. Sometimes you get a good matchup, and sometimes you’re playing a top-six team with another top-six team, like we did this past year. That’s the way she goes,” Makar added.
A Complex Landscape
The dynamics of the current playoff structure can indeed complicate the path to the championship. The shift from a straightforward seeding system to one that includes divisional and wild-card placements has sparked debate among players and fans alike. Makar’s sentiments underscore a broader desire for a format that might provide more equitable opportunities for all teams involved.
As the Avalanche prepare for their upcoming season, the hope remains that they can recapture their championship form. Makar’s perspective on the playoff format adds an intriguing layer to the conversation as the team seeks to navigate the competitive landscape of the NHL.
