Brennan Othmann faces pivotal NHL season as Rangers aim for depth and consistency

The New York Rangers are navigating a landscape where high-end prospects are scarce, making the development of their existing talents all the more critical. Among these talents is Brennan Othmann, a former first-round pick who was selected 16th overall in the 2021 NHL Draft. The organization envisioned him evolving into a top-six forward, but as he enters what could be a defining season, the pressure is mounting for him to fulfill that promise.

Struggles in the AHL and NHL

Last season, Othmann spent significant time with the Hartford Wolf Pack, where he played 27 games and posted decent numbers—12 goals and eight assists for a total of 20 points. These statistics, while not poor, did not reflect the high expectations set for a player of his draft pedigree. At the NHL level, however, Othmann’s performance was underwhelming; in 22 games, he managed only two assists.

Now, as he approaches the final year of his entry-level contract, Othmann finds himself in a sink-or-swim scenario. The Rangers are counting on him to prove he belongs in the NHL, or risk seeing his tenure with the team come to an end.

Reassessing Potential

At this juncture, it may be unrealistic to expect Othmann to blossom into a top-tier scorer. However, there is hope he can carve out a role as a reliable middle-six forward. His combination of grit, physicality, and size makes him a formidable presence on the ice. Furthermore, his above-average shooting ability and skillful hands provide him an edge that could be advantageous, especially if he can consistently translate those assets into productive play.

If he can put his game together, Othmann has the potential to emerge as a solid third-line forward, contributing offensively while also bringing a work ethic that aligns with the Rangers’ needs.

The Rangers’ Depth Dilemma

The Rangers boast a roster filled with star players capable of carrying the team, but they face the ongoing challenge of building depth. Like many contending teams, New York is searching for consistency within its bottom six. Othmann embodies the type of player who could help fill that gap. At just 22 years old, he still has time to develop, but the urgency is palpable.

The Rangers are hopeful that Othmann can replicate the success he had in the 2023-24 season with the Wolf Pack, where he scored 49 points. That performance provided a glimmer of hope for his ascension to the NHL, yet last season’s showing was largely disappointing. The struggles of the entire team could partially explain his lack of production, but the focus now shifts to his potential to solidify a role in the lineup.

What Lies Ahead?

Should Brennan Othmann fail to demonstrate he can take that crucial next step, the implications could be significant. The Rangers may decide to cut their losses and move on, potentially seeking a fresh start for him elsewhere. With other promising prospects in their pipeline—such as Gabe Perreault and Carey Terrance—Othmann’s window of opportunity is narrowing as New York looks to bolster its roster through its internal talent pool.

As the new season approaches, all eyes will be on Othmann. The stakes are high, not just for his career but also for a Rangers team eager to find the depth and consistency necessary for a successful campaign.
