Zeek Biggers Impresses Dolphins Coaches, Solidifying His Role as a Seventh-Round Gem
The Miami Dolphins have been witnessing several promising developments as they progress through the season, and one standout has emerged in the form of rookie defensive tackle Zeek Biggers. Selected in the seventh round of the draft, the Georgia Tech product is beginning to showcase the skills that could earn him a lasting place in the Dolphins’ defensive rotation.
Rising Through the Ranks
Biggers’ journey has prompted discussions about why he wasn’t utilized earlier in the season, especially considering he was active for only one of the first nine games. His opportunity arose when he stepped in for veteran offseason acquisition Matthew Butler, marking a turning point in his young career.
When asked about Biggers’ delayed entry onto the field, defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver offered a straightforward response during his weekly media briefing.
“Yeah, we don’t play Madden,” Weaver quipped. “I can’t just put them on the field and they automatically know where to go and how to play and what to do. There’s some growth and maturation that needed to occur there. There’s a reason we got the kid where we did, right? But we saw the potential in him. And again, truly a credit to the kid and all the work he’s put in to put himself in this position.”
The Work Behind the Success
Weaver’s insights underscore the reality that if Biggers had entered the NFL as a polished player, he likely would not have been available for selection at the bottom of the draft. What’s crucial now is that Biggers is clearly evolving into a valuable asset for the team.
“He’s just put in a ton of work,” Weaver noted. “Even from a body composition standpoint, he looks different. So it’s truly a credit to the kid and all the work he’s done both on and off the field in terms of digesting the playbook, making sure he was sound from an assignment standpoint. He’s taken enormous strides in this run defense. His pass rush has been there, we’ve seen that. But from just a run defensive perspective, he’s gotten so much better. So it’s truly just been a credit to the kid, really proud of him, has all the potential in the world. And that’s why he’s gotten the snaps he has.”
Building Momentum in the NFL
Biggers made his NFL debut in Week 2, stepping in for Benito Jones, who was sidelined due to an oblique injury. Though he played just six snaps in that game, his role has expanded significantly since then.
Week 10: He logged 19 snaps against the Buffalo Bills.
Week 11: Biggers recorded a career-high seven tackles while playing 23 snaps against the Washington Commanders.
Recent Performance: In last Sunday’s 21-17 victory over the New Orleans Saints, he increased his snap count to 31.
As the season progresses, it appears that Biggers has secured a spot in the Dolphins’ lineup, and his trajectory suggests he will continue to make meaningful contributions. The coaching staff and fans alike will be watching closely to see how his development unfolds in the months ahead.
