Zach Ertz’s Season-Ending ACL Tear Adds to Washington Commanders’ Nightmare Losing Streak

The Washington Commanders are facing a tumultuous season, and the situation worsened significantly during their latest matchup against the Minnesota Vikings. With a disheartening score that lowered their record to 3-10, the team now finds itself on an excruciating eight-game losing streak. However, the loss extends beyond the scoreboard, as the team suffered a severe injury to one of its key offensive players.

Costly Third-Quarter Collision

In a season already marred by injuries, the Commanders faced yet another setback in the third quarter. Tight end Zach Ertz, a critical component of the team’s offense, made a desperate attempt for a catch, only to be met with a jarring hit to his knee from Vikings safety Jay Ward. Ertz collapsed to the ground, and despite the frantic efforts of the medical staff, he was ultimately carted off the field. Head coach Dan Quinn later confirmed the worst fears: Ertz had torn his ACL in his right knee, a devastating injury that will sideline him for the remainder of the season.

Before Ertz’s injury, the day had already been trying for the Commanders. Quarterback Jayden Daniels also took a significant hit, landing hard on his left elbow after an interception. This was particularly concerning as it was the same elbow he had dislocated earlier in the season against the Seattle Seahawks.

A Bright Spot in a Tough Season

Despite the team’s struggles, Ertz has been a beacon of consistency during his second year with the Commanders. Heading into Week 14, he had amassed nearly 500 receiving yards alongside four touchdown receptions. In 2024, he led the team with seven receiving touchdowns and ranked second in receiving yards with 654. His 66 receptions that season were only surpassed by star wide receiver Terry McLaurin.

Ertz’s journey began with the Philadelphia Eagles, who selected him in the second round of the 2013 NFL Draft. Over his 13-year career with the Eagles, Commanders, and Cardinals, he has established himself as one of the league’s most productive tight ends, boasting an impressive tally of 825 receptions for 8,527 yards and 57 touchdowns.

A Season Defined by Absences

The Commanders’ offensive unit has struggled to find stability this season, often playing without key players. Quarterback Jayden Daniels has missed six games due to various injuries, while running back Austin Ekeler suffered a torn Achilles in Week 2. Star receiver Terry McLaurin has also been plagued by injuries, missing seven games with a right quad issue. Losing Ertz only compounds the challenges faced by an already battered roster.

Quinn Praises ‘Elite Habits’

Coach Dan Quinn expressed the significance of Ertz’s presence on the team, noting that he was the first player signed by general manager Adam Peters in the 2024 offseason for a reason. Quinn lauded Ertz’s “elite habits,” emphasizing his dedication and consistency in practice. “It was over and over doing the things and not getting bored doing them. It has been significant for us for sure, the production on the field,” Quinn remarked.

Now, with Ertz on a one-year contract and the future of his tenure in Washington uncertain, the Commanders face not only the daunting task of rebuilding their lineup but also the challenge of maintaining morale as they navigate the remainder of the season.
