Zac Robinson explodes over Falcons’ run game woes: “We’ve got to get a jump on that”

Zac Robinson Addresses Falcons’ Struggling Ground Game

The Atlanta Falcons find themselves in a challenging position as they approach a pivotal matchup against the Indianapolis Colts in Germany this Sunday. Currently enduring a three-game losing streak, the Falcons have struggled significantly on the ground, failing to surpass 75 rushing yards in each of those contests. Offensive coordinator Zac Robinson has stepped into the spotlight, tasked with addressing the shortcomings of the running game.

Challenges in the Running Game

Robinson has identified two main factors contributing to the team’s faltering run game. As head coach Raheem Morris emphasizes the importance of rushing as the Falcons’ lifeline, Robinson recognizes the critical role it plays in the team’s overall offensive strategy. Unfortunately, the statistics reflect a troubling trend: the Falcons are currently ranked 19th in the NFL in Expected Points Added (EPA) per rush.

Despite these challenges, Robinson believes the foundation for a successful running game is already in place. The issue, he argues, lies in correcting the finer details. He suggests that some of the statistics may be misleading, as short passes, often considered an extension of the running game, do not contribute to traditional rushing totals.

Opportunities in the Offense

“We’ll continue to get it rolling like we’re hoping,” Robinson stated, expressing optimism about the potential for improvement. He noted that during recent games, opportunities have arisen where a run-pass option (RPO) could have resulted in positive yardage if executed differently. For example, plays where Bijan Robinson, the dynamic rookie running back, was thrown the ball could have been successful handoffs instead.

Bijan has been heavily involved in the offense, recording eight receptions for 50 yards, alongside 12 carries for 46 yards. This reflects a strategy where the Falcons aim to maximize touches for their playmakers, with the ball being placed in Bijan’s hands on nearly 40% of their offensive plays.

Fundamentals and Execution

Robinson highlighted that the modest rushing gains—often just two to four yards—can be misleading. Small adjustments in blocking and execution could transform those short runs into longer, more impactful plays. “There were some opportunities for those runs of two, three, and four to possibly be eight, nine, 10, 12,” he explained, underlining the importance of coaching fundamentals and techniques.

Looking Ahead to the Colts

As the Falcons prepare to face a Colts defense ranked 13th in rushing EPA, they must also consider the unique challenges posed by Indianapolis’s potent offense, which leads the league in scoring at 32.2 points per game. The Colts have a reputation for forcing teams to abandon the run early, making it crucial for Atlanta to maintain a balanced approach.

To secure an upset, the Falcons will need to execute complementary football across all three phases: offense, defense, and special teams. Their ability to establish a functional run game will be vital in avoiding predictable play-calling.

With the kickoff set for 9:30 a.m. EST on NFL Network and FOX 5, the Falcons enter the fray as 6.5-point underdogs. The stakes are high as they seek to reverse their fortunes and reignite their running game.
