Vikings Sign Cam Akers to Strengthen Backfield Amid Aaron Jones Injury

The Minnesota Vikings are turning to veteran talent as they navigate injury troubles with running back Aaron Jones. In a strategic move, the team is reportedly signing Cam Akers, a seasoned rusher, to bolster their backfield options. The specifics of whether Akers will join the 53-man roster or be placed on the practice squad remain unclear.

Impact of Aaron Jones’ Injury

The decision to bring in Akers comes in light of Jones suffering a hamstring injury during Week 2’s matchup. Head coach Kevin O’Connell has indicated that Jones is not expected to suit up for the upcoming Week 3 game. This leaves the Vikings in a challenging position as they look to maintain their offensive rhythm.

Cam Akers’ Career and Recent Performance

Akers, who has previously donned a Vikings jersey, appeared in six games for Minnesota in 2023 and made 12 appearances in 2024. Last season, he recorded 64 carries for 297 yards and found the end zone once, in addition to catching 10 passes for 52 yards and two touchdowns. Drafted in the second round by the Los Angeles Rams in 2020, Akers showcased significant promise early in his career, but injuries—including two Achilles tears—have hindered his progress.

Next Steps for the Vikings’ Backfield

With Jones sidelined, Jordan Mason is expected to step up as the primary running back. Mason has displayed impressive form during the first two weeks, suggesting he can handle the lead role effectively. The Vikings are also facing a setback in their depth chart after Ty Chandler was placed on injured reserve, which further emphasizes the importance of Akers’ arrival.

In addition to Mason, the Vikings have Zavier Scott on the 53-man roster and Xazavian Valladay available on the practice squad, providing the team with a mix of options as they prepare for their next game.

As the Vikings grapple with these changes, they remain focused on adapting and overcoming the challenges presented by injuries in their roster.
