Vikings face early season struggles as Jordan Mason steps up amid injuries and suspensions

The Minnesota Vikings have encountered significant challenges in the opening weeks of the season. After already grappling with the loss of wide receiver Jordan Addison—who faces a three-game suspension stemming from a DUI arrest in 2024—the team now finds itself without another critical offensive player: starting running back Aaron Jones.

Jones has been placed on injured reserve due to a hamstring injury, sidelining him for at least four games. This development necessitates a reconfiguration of the Vikings’ running back lineup, as head coach Kevin O’Connell will likely turn to a newcomer to shoulder the bulk of the carries in the upcoming matchups.

Current state of the Vikings’ running back depth chart

The injury to Jones has resulted in a new hierarchy for the Vikings’ backfield. Here’s a look at the current depth chart:

Jordan Mason
Ty Chandler
Zavier Scott
Cam Akers

Jordan Mason takes the lead

Mason now stands as the leading candidate for the starting role in Jones’ absence. In the first two games of the season, he outpaced Jones in snap percentage, showcasing his readiness for a more prominent role.

After an impressive 2024 season with the San Francisco 49ers, where he averaged over five yards per carry on more than 150 attempts, Mason is known for his dynamic running style. His ability to navigate through defenders allows him to accumulate yards effectively. In a recent matchup against the Bears, he rushed for 68 yards on 15 carries, averaging a solid 4.5 yards per attempt.

Although Mason may not fit the mold of a traditional feature back, his performance last season in the absence of Christian McCaffrey demonstrated his potential. With the Vikings’ offensive line regarded as one of the best in the league, there’s optimism that he can replicate his previous success.

Ty Chandler’s versatility

Chandler brings a different skill set to the Vikings’ backfield. Recognized as the team’s most adept pass-catcher, his speed—recorded at sub-4.40 seconds in the 40-yard dash—makes him a valuable asset in open-field situations.

Despite not guaranteeing success in the NFL, Chandler, a former fifth-round pick, presents an attractive option for specific offensive packages. With J.J. McCarthy, the young quarterback, likely looking for reliable outlets in Jones’ absence, Chandler could become a key figure in the passing game.

Additionally, Chandler has shown promise as a kick returner, averaging over 28 yards per return this season. With Jones injured, he is expected to see an increase in playing time, providing him with an opportunity to display his explosiveness on the field.

Zavier Scott’s potential

Standing at 6-foot-1 and weighing 219 pounds, Scott possesses the physical attributes of an ideal running back. Known for his tough, punishing style, he is a raw talent who has yet to fully harness his potential.

While his upright running style and rapid pace are noteworthy, Scott’s development as a pass-catcher remains a work in progress. He has had limited opportunities in his NFL career, and with Jones out, he will likely compete with Cam Akers for the RB3 role in the depth chart.

Cam Akers brings experience

Akers, the most seasoned running back on the Vikings’ roster, has accumulated over 2,000 rushing yards during his five-year NFL career. Though he has not established himself as a feature back, he possesses commendable field vision and a solid tempo when carrying the ball.

Familiar with O’Connell’s system from his time with the Vikings over the past two seasons, Akers may not dethrone Mason as the primary ball-carrier but can contribute significantly when called upon. His experience could provide valuable depth as the Vikings navigate this challenging period.

As the Vikings adjust to these personnel changes, the spotlight will be on Mason and the rest of the running backs to rise to the occasion, ensuring that the team remains competitive despite the adversity they face.
