Vikings brace for crucial clash with Packers as injuries cloud lineup decisions
The Minnesota Vikings are gearing up for a critical Week 12 encounter against the Green Bay Packers, with two key players, Jonathan Greenard and center Ryan Kelly, listed as questionable due to injuries.
Injury Report Overview
Ryan Kelly, who has been sidelined since a concussion during the team’s Week 4 loss to Pittsburgh, is still navigating his way back to full health. Head coach Kevin O’Connell described Kelly’s questionable designation as “procedural,” suggesting it is part of the team’s cautious approach. “Feels good to have that group of five as a potential option at the offensive line position,” O’Connell noted, expressing optimism about Kelly’s progress as the week concludes.
Jonathan Greenard’s situation mirrors that of his teammate. The pass rusher missed the Vikings’ Week 11 loss to the Bears due to a shoulder issue but has shown signs of improvement. After not participating in practice on Wednesday, he progressed to a limited role on Thursday. His return could provide a significant boost to the Vikings’ defensive efforts, especially after Dallas Turner’s commendable performance in the last game.
Offensive Line Stability
In Kelly’s absence, the Vikings have relied on a starting offensive line featuring Christian Darrisaw, Donovan Jackson, Blake Brandel, Will Fries, and Brian O’Neill. This group has largely held their own, with Brandel gradually acclimating to the center position. The prospect of Kelly rejoining the lineup would enhance the unit’s cohesion, crucial for the upcoming matchup against a formidable Packers defense.
The good news for the Vikings is that both Darrisaw and Fries, who had knee concerns, are expected to be fully available this Sunday after missing a day of practice earlier in the week.
Packers Injury Updates
On the other side of the field, the Green Bay Packers are also facing their share of injury challenges. Head coach Matt LaFleur provided an update on star running back Josh Jacobs, who will again be limited in practice on Friday. LaFleur emphasized that the decision regarding Jacobs’ availability for Sunday is a collaborative one, involving input from multiple parties. Jacobs was able to practice on the final two days of the week, which may bode well for his chances of playing.
In addition to Jacobs, the Packers are dealing with other significant absences. Key players Quay Walker, Nate Hobbs, and Karl Brooks did not participate in practice throughout the week, raising concerns about their availability as the team prepares for this pivotal divisional clash.
As the Vikings and Packers prepare to face off, the status of these injured players could be a decisive factor in the outcome of this must-win game.
