Vikings face injury woes ahead of Steelers clash in Ireland

The Minnesota Vikings are gearing up for their upcoming matchup against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Ireland, but they are facing mounting injury concerns. The team’s first injury report of the week reveals a mix of promising updates and troubling setbacks.

Positive Signs for the Offensive Line

The good news for the Vikings comes in the form of center Ryan Kelly. After missing last week’s game due to a concussion, Kelly returned as a full participant in Wednesday’s practice. His presence on the field is expected to provide a significant boost to the Vikings’ offensive line, which has faced challenges in recent weeks.

Concerning Absences

However, the injury report also highlights significant concerns as five players, including four starters, did not participate in practice. Quarterback J.J. McCarthy, left guard Donovan Jackson, outside linebacker Andrew Van Ginkel, and defensive tackle Javon Hargrave were all sidelined due to injuries. Additionally, defensive tackle Jonathan Allen received a scheduled rest day.

McCarthy, who is dealing with an ankle injury, and Jackson, recovering from a wrist issue, were already ruled out for the upcoming game. This means that Carson Wentz will once again take the reins as quarterback, while Blake Brandel will step in at left guard.

Hargrave’s Status Remains Uncertain

Javon Hargrave’s situation is particularly noteworthy. He exited last week’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals with a chest injury. Head coach Kevin O’Connell noted that Hargrave could have returned to the field during that game, but his status will need close monitoring as the week progresses. The Vikings have demonstrated solid depth in the defensive tackle position, with Jalen Redmond and Levi Drake Rodriguez stepping up impressively this season, yet Hargrave’s experience—having spent the first four years of his career with the Steelers—would be invaluable in this international clash.

Van Ginkel’s Neck Injury

Another player to watch is Andrew Van Ginkel. After missing Week 2 due to a concussion, he returned to play against the Bengals but only participated in eight defensive snaps. His absence from Wednesday’s practice was attributed to a neck injury, an issue he has grappled with since training camp. O’Connell provided insight, explaining that Van Ginkel had initially felt good after returning from the concussion protocol but has since experienced lingering neck-related problems. The team is now assessing his condition as they prepare for Sunday’s game.

If Van Ginkel is unable to play, it would be a significant blow for the Vikings. His capability to drop into coverage was demonstrated last year when he recorded a pick-six against Aaron Rodgers in an international game. In his absence, Dallas Turner has been a key contributor and is expected to play a prominent role regardless of Van Ginkel’s status.

Additional Injury Updates

The injury report also notes that Josh Metellus was limited in practice due to a foot injury, while rookie tight end Ben Yurosek did not practice because of a knee issue.

On the Steelers’ side, they also managed some rest days but suffered a key loss with outside linebacker Alex Highsmith already ruled out due to a high ankle sprain. His absence will place additional pressure on the Pittsburgh defense, relying on the talents of T.J. Watt, Nick Herbig, and rookie Jack Sawyer to fill the void.

As the Vikings prepare for this high-stakes game in Ireland, the health of their roster will be critical in determining their chances against a formidable Steelers team.
