Vikings face injury chaos as key players miss practice ahead of Seahawks clash
The Minnesota Vikings are grappling with significant injury concerns as they prepare for their upcoming game against the Seattle Seahawks. During their first practice of the week on Wednesday, two key offensive linemen, left tackle Christian Darrisaw and left guard Donovan Jackson, were notably absent, as indicated by the team’s injury report.
Injury Updates on Darrisaw and Jackson
Darrisaw, who is dealing with a foot injury, and Jackson, suffering from an ankle issue, both exited the Vikings’ recent blowout loss to the Green Bay Packers before the game concluded. The coaching staff has expressed cautious optimism regarding their potential participation this Sunday. Head coach Kevin O’Connell stated, “Both those guys, they will not participate today. Donovan obviously dealing with his ankle. It’s sore, but we’ve had conversations about seeing what the rest of his week looks like as possibly being available for this week. But at the same time, he’ll have to improve from where he’s at right now to have a chance to play, which is very possible.”
O’Connell also addressed Darrisaw’s status, hoping he can progress through his soreness to participate in practice later in the week. The urgency of their recovery is underscored by the Vikings’ offensive strategy, which could be heavily impacted if either player is unable to suit up on Sunday.
Backup Plans in Place
In the event that Darrisaw and Jackson cannot play, the Vikings have viable backup options. Veteran swing tackle Justin Skule is poised to step in for Darrisaw. Skule has logged nearly 300 snaps this season across both tackle positions, although his performance in pass protection has been concerning—he has allowed 21 pressures and six sacks, according to Pro Football Focus. Meanwhile, Blake Brandel, who has been versatile on the offensive line, including a recent stint as a center, is prepared to fill in for Jackson.
Quarterback Situation and Other Injuries
The quarterback situation remains fluid as J.J. McCarthy progresses through the concussion protocol. He was listed as a limited participant in practice on Wednesday, focusing on individual drills but yet to receive clearance for team activities. Max Brosmer took all the first-team reps, making him the likely starter against the Seahawks, although O’Connell has not completely ruled McCarthy out for the matchup.
The injury report also noted limited participation for outside linebackers Jonathan Greenard (shoulder) and Dallas Turner (hip), along with safeties Josh Metellus (knee/shoulder) and Theo Jackson (neck). Notably, wide receiver Justin Jefferson and safety Harrison Smith were given rest days.
The Vikings are particularly eager to recover Greenard, who has been sidelined for the past two weeks. Turner has stepped up impressively in Greenard’s absence, recording sacks in both games. Should either Metellus or Jackson remain unavailable for the game, rookie Jay Ward could see an increase in snaps at safety.
As the Vikings navigate these injury challenges, the stakes for Sunday’s game against the Seahawks continue to rise. The team is keenly aware that their playoff hopes may hinge on the health and performance of their key players.
