Vikings face tough matchup against Falcons with key injuries
The Minnesota Vikings are gearing up for a challenging encounter against the Atlanta Falcons, but they will do so without three significant contributors. Head coach Kevin O’Connell delivered the unfortunate news during a press conference on Friday afternoon, confirming that outside linebacker Andrew Van Ginkel, left tackle Christian Darrisaw, and cornerback Jeff Okudah will be sidelined for Sunday night’s game.
Injuries to Key Players
Both Van Ginkel and Okudah entered the concussion protocol following Monday’s game and have not cleared it in time for the upcoming matchup. O’Connell expressed optimism about their recovery, stating, “They’re both doing well and progressing through the protocol, but the protocol’s in place for a reason. Anticipate those guys continuing on that upward trajectory into early next week.”
Van Ginkel’s absence is particularly impactful. Last season, he emerged as one of the Vikings’ top defensive players, earning second-team All-Pro honors with impressive statistics that included 11.5 sacks, 18 tackles for loss, and two interceptions returned for touchdowns. In his place, the Vikings will turn to Dallas Turner, a promising second-year linebacker who impressed in his debut, playing 43 percent of the snaps in the opener. Jonathan Greenard will also continue to be a key presence at outside linebacker, while Bo Richter, Chaz Chambliss, and Gabriel Murphy could be called upon for additional depth.
Offensive Line Adjustments
Christian Darrisaw will have to wait to return from a major knee injury sustained last October. Unlike last week, when he was deemed questionable, Darrisaw has already been ruled out a full two days ahead of the game, although O’Connell confirmed there was no setback in his recovery. Justin Skule, who faced challenges in his previous start against the Bears, is expected to step in again at left tackle.
Secondary Shuffles
With Jeff Okudah out, the Vikings’ secondary faces further adjustments. The team may rely on either Dwight McGlothern or Fabian Moreau to fill in for Okudah, who only played 16 snaps in the season opener. The absence of Okudah will test the depth of the Vikings’ secondary.
Harrison Smith’s Status Uncertain
Safety Harrison Smith is officially listed as questionable, and his status will likely remain unclear until the inactives are announced 90 minutes before kickoff. Should he be unable to play, Jay Ward would likely see an increase in snaps, joining Josh Metellus and Theo Jackson in the backfield.
Positive News on Other Injuries
On a brighter note for the Vikings, center Ryan Kelly and tight end Josh Oliver, who both missed practice earlier in the week, have no injury designations and are expected to play. Additionally, cornerback Isaiah Rodgers and return specialist Myles Price, who were limited Thursday, are also cleared for action.
Falcons Injury Report
For the Falcons, there’s some good news as well. Wide receivers Drake London and Darnell Mooney have been cleared from the injury report and will participate in the game. However, edge rusher James Pearce Jr. and defensive back Billy Bowman Jr. are listed as questionable, adding some uncertainty to their lineup.
The Vikings and Falcons will face off in a critical matchup this Sunday at 7:20 p.m. at U.S. Bank Stadium, promising an exciting evening of football despite the absences on both sides.
