Tyler Shough sparks Saints’ resurgence, aiming for NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year after Drew Brees mentorship
The buzz surrounding New Orleans Saints quarterback Tyler Shough is palpable following a thrilling start to his NFL career. With eight games as a starter, Shough has played a pivotal role in transforming the Saints into arguably the most formidable team in the NFC South. Currently boasting a 5-3 record, the Saints have surged ahead with a four-game winning streak. In contrast, the Atlanta Falcons sit at 4-4, while the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have stumbled to a dismal 1-7, and the Carolina Panthers are also at 4-4 over their last eight outings.
As the Saints continue to thrive, Shough’s performance has put him squarely in the conversation for the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year. His journey from the sidelines to the starting position has been anything but ordinary, and the rookie quarterback acknowledges the significant influence of legendary former Saints quarterback Drew Brees on his development.
Learning from a Legend
In a recent interview on SiriusXM NFL Radio, Shough opened up about the invaluable insights he gained from Brees throughout the season. “Being able to talk to Drew Brees midway through the season and get a really in-depth look at what his week looked like and his preparation,” Shough shared. He emphasized the importance of trusting the coaching staff’s game plan while incorporating Brees’ effective preparation strategies into his own routine.
Reflecting on their discussions, Shough noted how encouraging it was to realize that he was already implementing many of the successful tactics Brees employed. “When I got to talk to Drew and kind of compare and contrast to what I had been doing, it was really encouraging because I had been doing most all those things, and I could implement some of the things that he was doing from a preparation standpoint.”
With Shough at the helm, the Saints are not only looking to capitalize on their current momentum but are also positioning themselves for a promising future. As he continues to develop in his rookie season, the influence of a mentor like Brees could be the catalyst that propels him—and the Saints—into the upper echelons of the NFL.
