Tua Tagovailoa responds to Cam Newton’s criticism amid challenging Dolphins season
It’s been a tumultuous season for Tua Tagovailoa, the starting quarterback for the Miami Dolphins. The Alabama product finds himself under the spotlight, facing scrutiny from multiple angles, most notably from former NFL quarterback Cam Newton.

During a recent episode of ESPN’s “First Take,” Newton expressed his concerns about Tagovailoa’s performance and the expectations that come with his substantial contract. “Tua Tagovailoa is making more than Patrick Mahomes, Justin Herbert, Lamar Jackson, Jalen Hurts, Baker Mayfield, Matthew Stafford, Jayden Daniels,” he remarked. While Newton clarified that he wasn’t “pocket watching,” he drew from a famous quote by rapper Biggie Smalls, stating, “More money, more problems,” and suggested that in Tagovailoa’s case, it should be framed as “more money, more expectations.”
Newton elaborated, stating, “When I see Tua Tagovailoa, over this year alone, I’ve heard him more than I ever have. That’s not to say you can’t talk, but I like quiet Tua, Alabama Tua, chip-on-the-shoulder Tua.” He emphasized the weight of Tagovailoa’s responsibilities, particularly given the roster of talent surrounding him. “When you have a Ferrari and a Lamborghini and other amenities that some quarterbacks wish they had, the expectations should be higher,” he added.
Tagovailoa Defends Himself
In response to Newton’s remarks, Tagovailoa chose not to back down. Speaking with the media, he made his feelings clear. “I want to see anybody on the streets come play QB,” he stated. “Cam is doing his thing, but I think it’s easier to hold a clicker and talk about what someone else is doing wrong when you’re not out there having to do the same.”
This season, Tagovailoa has thrown five touchdown passes but has also faced challenges, including four interceptions. His current passer rating sits at 87.1, placing him 19th in the league, and he is tied for the second-most interceptions this season.
