Trey McBride reflects on performance and seeks redemption
Trey McBride, the Arizona Cardinals’ tight end, is his own toughest critic. As he approaches the conclusion of a remarkable season that has seen him set multiple franchise and league records, McBride faced an unexpected hurdle during Week 16’s clash against the Atlanta Falcons. In a game that saw the Cardinals falter, McBride’s performance was notably subdued, catching just four passes for a mere 28 yards—a far cry from his usual dominance.
A Moment of Self-Reflection
After the game, McBride didn’t shy away from expressing his frustrations. He candidly admitted to reporters that his disappointment stemmed more from his own shortcomings than the performance of the opposing team or quarterback Jacoby Brissett.
“I was frustrated, obviously. I was mad at myself more than anything,” McBride explained. “Nothing that they (Atlanta) or Jacoby did. I was mad at myself for a few plays I left out there. That end zone play in particular, I feel like I’ve caught much harder balls than that. I’m really mad at myself for not catching that.”
His self-critique didn’t stop there. McBride also recalled a pivotal moment where he was thwarted by safety Jessie Bates, a play he felt he could have executed with ease.
“I was just more mad at myself for my performance — it was nothing that they did or nothing that our team did. It was me. I got to be better. It’s been eating at me all week,” he added, revealing the weight of his self-assessment.
Looking Ahead with Determination
As he prepares for the upcoming matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals, McBride’s focus is resolute. He is eager for the opportunity to shift the narrative surrounding his recent performance.
“I’m excited to have an opportunity this week to change the narrative,” he stated, looking forward to redeeming himself on the field. Given the impressive body of work he’s produced this season and the Bengals’ struggles against tight ends, McBride’s determination could set the stage for a standout performance.
With a season of highs behind him, McBride remains driven to bounce back, proving once again why he is a standout player in the league. The coming weeks will be a test of his resolve and a chance to showcase the talent that has defined his remarkable season thus far.
