Titans stumble in Ward’s debut as Broncos capitalize on missed chances for a 20-12 victory
The Tennessee Titans faced a disappointing start to the season, falling to the Denver Broncos 20-12 in Week 1 at Empower Field at Mile High. The game marked the debut of Titans quarterback Cam Ward, who experienced a mix of promise and frustration as his team squandered several scoring opportunities.
Early Offense Sets the Tone
The Titans struck first with a 50-yard field goal from Joey Slye on their opening drive, setting a hopeful tone. However, the Broncos quickly responded, with kicker Wil Lutz matching Slye’s effort from 39 yards out.
Despite a strong defensive display, including two first-half turnovers—a timely interception by cornerback Roger McCreary and a forced fumble by defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons—the Titans could only convert these opportunities into three points.
Broncos Take Control
The momentum shifted late in the second quarter after the Titans were forced to punt from their own 1-yard line. This misfortune provided the Broncos with favorable field position, which they capitalized on swiftly. Quarterback Bo Nix connected with wide receiver Courtland Sutton for a 38-yard touchdown pass, giving the Broncos their first lead of the game.
In a bid to respond, the Titans benefited from a spectacular 71-yard kickoff return by rookie wide receiver Chimere Dike. This set up Slye for another field goal, bringing the score to 10-7.
Defensive Resurgence but Offensive Stagnation
The Titans’ defense continued to shine, as new safety Xavier Woods intercepted Nix just two plays into the second half. This turnover provided a crucial opportunity for the Titans to regain the lead. They capitalized with yet another field goal, putting them ahead 12-10 with just under 12 minutes remaining in the third quarter.
However, that would be the last time the Titans found the scoreboard. The Broncos tightened their grip on the game, adding another field goal from Lutz before running back J.K. Dobbins sealed the victory with a late touchdown.
Ward’s Struggles and Future Outlook
Cam Ward’s performance showcased flashes of potential but ultimately resulted in a lackluster stat line: 112 yards on 12 of 28 passing attempts. Still in search of his first NFL touchdown, Ward faces pressure as he prepares for Week 2 against the Los Angeles Rams, where he will look to secure both his first score and his inaugural win.
As the Titans regroup, they will need to address their red-zone inefficiencies and capitalize on defensive turnovers if they hope to bounce back in the coming weeks.
