Titans rookie Cam Ward braces for historic sack streak as he seeks redemption against fellow strugglers Houston Texans

Titans rookie Cam Ward faces daunting challenge against Texans

As the Tennessee Titans prepare for their upcoming matchup against the Houston Texans, all eyes are on rookie quarterback Cam Ward, who has had a tumultuous start to his NFL career. Many fans and analysts may not have predicted a stellar beginning for Ward, and his performance so far has validated those concerns. After just three games, he leads the league with a staggering 15 sacks absorbed, and the prospect of adding to that total looms large as he gears up for Sunday’s game.

Historic sack streak on the line

Ward’s current predicament places him on the precipice of a historic milestone—one that few quarterbacks would want to achieve. According to Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio, if Ward succumbs to four or more sacks against the Texans, he would join an exclusive group of quarterbacks. Specifically, he would become only the third first-round quarterback since the AFL-NFL merger to be sacked four or more times in each of his first four games. The only other quarterbacks to bear that distinction are Archie Manning of the New Orleans Saints in 1971 and David Carr, who faced a similar fate with the Texans in 2002.

Given the Titans’ current struggles—sitting at 0-3—Ward’s chances of joining that unfortunate club seem increasingly likely. Facing a fellow winless team in the Texans not only adds pressure but also presents a crucial opportunity for both teams to secure their first victory of the season.

A fresh approach with new play-calling

In a bid to spark some life into their offense, the Titans have made a significant change by appointing Bo Hardegree as the new offensive play-caller. This shift could prove pivotal for Ward as he navigates the complexities of the game. Expressing optimism about the change, Ward stated, “I think it’s going to be great. He understands the offense as a whole, he understands where my head is at, just what I see on the field. He has experience with the Raiders, and he has been around some great quarterbacks.”

The decision by Titans head coach Brian Callahan to entrust play-calling duties to Hardegree reflects a strategic move aimed at revitalizing the team’s offense. The outcome of this transition remains to be seen, but for Ward, the stakes could not be higher as he looks to turn the tide on his rocky start and lead his team to a long-awaited victory.
