Titans Interim Coach McCoy Calls for Consistency from Cam Ward After Tough Loss

Tennessee Titans head coach Mike McCoy is urging quarterback Cam Ward to find consistency in his performance following a disappointing 27-20 defeat to the Los Angeles Chargers. As the Titans grapple with a challenging season, McCoy acknowledges both the potential and the need for improvement in Ward’s game.

A Season in Transition

The Titans are currently in a state of flux, sitting at 1-8 and facing a potential rebuild. With a coaching change often signaling substantial roster adjustments, the franchise is evaluating which players will remain as they move forward. Notably, the team has already made significant moves, including trading away key defensive players ahead of the deadline.

In the midst of this upheaval, the Titans’ collection of offensive rookies stands out as a promising core that could remain intact. Chief among them is Cam Ward, the first overall pick in this year’s draft. Fans had high hopes for Ward after the Titans opted to move on from former quarterback Will Levis, who struggled during his time as a starter.

Despite not meeting the lofty expectations set for him, Ward has shown glimpses of potential that suggest he can develop into a reliable leader for the franchise. Under the guidance of interim coach McCoy, the focus is on helping Ward adapt to the demands of professional football while the organization seeks to establish a new system.

Evaluating the Performance

In the aftermath of the loss to the Chargers, McCoy provided a balanced assessment of Ward’s performance. “There were some really good plays, and there were a couple of plays in there where you can say: ‘We have to do a better job here. We have to be able to make this throw, convert it,’” McCoy noted. “But then there are some plays in there where you say: ‘Wow, that’s pretty damn good.’ So there are the ups and downs, and we have to be more consistent.”

Against the Chargers, Ward completed 12 of 21 passes for just 145 yards, without a touchdown or turnover. The rookie quarterback has faced challenges, including the absence of veteran receiver Calvin Ridley due to injury. Additionally, Tyler Lockett’s recent release has left Ward relying heavily on his fellow rookies as primary offensive targets.

Looking Ahead

While Ward’s inconsistent performance may raise concerns, the Titans seem willing to give him time to develop amid a broader organizational reassessment. The challenges he faces are significant, but McCoy believes that with the right guidance, Ward can break through and become a valuable asset for the franchise.

As the Titans prepare for their upcoming bye week, they hope to regroup and reflect on their fourth consecutive loss. With the future uncertain, the team’s commitment to nurturing young talent like Ward will be vital as they aim to turn the tide in the remainder of the season.
