Texans’ offense falters as Nico Collins remains underused in lackluster Week 1 performance against Ravens

Texans’ Offense Stumbles as Nico Collins Underutilized in Disappointing Season Opener Against Ravens

The Houston Texans entered Week 1 with high expectations for their offense, particularly regarding the role of wide receiver Nico Collins. With Christian Kirk sidelined due to injury and a backfield filled with uncertainties, many anticipated that Collins would be a focal point. Instead, fans were left bewildered as he finished with a mere three receptions for 25 yards.

Struggles in Protection

The primary issue for the Texans was their inability to protect rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud. As Collins attempted to stretch the field with deep routes, the pressure on Stroud proved to be detrimental. He was sacked three times, faced pressure on 41% of his dropbacks, and was hit seven times throughout the game. The offensive line’s struggles were compounded by a series of penalties, including holding calls, false starts, and illegal shifts. As noted, this situation felt all too familiar for Texans supporters.

Contrasting Offensive Strategies

Another notable concern was the stark contrast in how teams utilized their star receivers. Take the Los Angeles Rams’ approach with Puka Nacua, for example. The Rams creatively moved Nacua around the formation, using him in diverse roles that engaged him throughout the game. In comparison, the Texans’ strategy with Collins lacked this dynamism.

“When you have the luxury of a Pro Bowl wide receiver, you find ways to get him the ball,” emphasized an analyst. The Rams demonstrated an intentional approach, featuring Nacua in various positions—whether on the run, over the middle, or in the slot. Conversely, Houston’s offensive scheme appeared rigid, lacking the creativity needed to involve Collins effectively.

Looking Ahead

Despite the lackluster start, there is hope for the Texans and Collins as the season progresses. However, the opening game did not reflect the best efforts of the team. With Collins underused, it felt as though the Texans missed an opportunity to capitalize on their talent and secure a victory in their season opener.

As the season unfolds, fans can only hope for a more inspired strategy that fully leverages the skills of their key players. The Texans’ journey ahead promises to be one of adjustment and adaptation, with the hope that better days are on the horizon.
