Titans Fall Short in Fourth Quarter Against Resilient Saints
The Tennessee Titans returned home from Nissan Stadium with a bitter taste following a 34-26 defeat to the New Orleans Saints in Week 17. Despite flashes of promise, the Titans were unable to secure a victory against a Saints team that has now surged to four straight wins.
Early Momentum Shifts
Tennessee began the contest with an impressive start, establishing a 13-0 advantage early in the second quarter. However, the tide turned when Saints kicker Charlie Smyth nailed a 56-yard field goal, injecting momentum into New Orleans. Defensive end Chase Young further capitalized on the shift by stripping the ball from quarterback Cam Ward, racing it back for a touchdown. This pivotal play narrowed the score to 13-10 in favor of the Titans.
Just before halftime, Tennessee answered back with a touchdown drive that culminated in a seven-yard reception by wide receiver Elic Ayomanor from Ward, giving them a slight cushion heading into the locker room.
Titans Defense Falters
The Saints continued to chip away at the Titans’ lead, with wide receiver Chris Olave catching a 19-yard touchdown pass early in the third quarter. This brought the gap down to a mere three points. Although Joey Slye extended the Titans’ lead with a field goal, Smyth countered with another long-range kick from 57 yards.
In the fourth quarter, Slye again showcased his long-distance capabilities with a 58-yard field goal. However, as the clock wound down, the Titans’ defense faltered. The Saints struck swiftly, scoring two touchdowns in the closing moments. Kevin Austin Jr. was the first to capitalize, followed by running back Audric Estime, who sealed the deal with a decisive touchdown.
Missed Opportunities Haunt Titans
Despite having opportunities to respond late in the game, the Titans were unable to capitalize on their drives, failing to put points on the board. The loss stings for Tennessee, yet it’s not entirely bleak. The team can take some momentum into their final regular-season game next week, providing a chance to showcase their skills one last time before the offseason.
This upcoming matchup is particularly crucial for general manager Mike Borgonzi, as he looks to evaluate the roster and identify areas needing improvement. With the Cleveland Browns securing a victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Titans have found themselves in a more favorable position regarding the NFL draft.
Looking Ahead
Tennessee’s journey isn’t over yet. They are set to face off against the AFC South-leading Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 18 at EverBank Stadium in Duval County. As the Titans prepare for this pivotal clash, the focus will be on ending the season on a high note and setting the stage for the future.
