Ted Karras Calls Out Swifties as Charity Rivalry with Travis Kelce Ignites Fan Frenzy
CINCINNATI – Ted Karras, the Cincinnati Bengals center, is no stranger to the spotlight. Since launching the Cincy Hat Project in 2022, he has sold nearly 100,000 hats, each contributing to a charitable cause. However, amid his recent accolades, Karras expressed a tinge of regret: he wishes he had saved one of the original hats.
A Nostalgic Miss
Speaking to reporters following his second nomination for the prestigious NFL Walter Payton Man of the Year Award, Karras reflected on the initial run of the hats. “That an OG,” he remarked, referring to the original design, which features an orange base, white lettering, and a black-outlined American flag on the left side. Initially, Karras ordered just 144 hats, intending them as gifts for teammates. “I was so excited to be signed finally and next March I wouldn’t have to go into free agency,” he recalled.
Gratitude for the Fans
Karras took a moment to express his deep appreciation for the Cincinnati fan base. “The main thing I want to say is just gratitude to the Cincinnati fan base and everyone around the county that’s bought a Cincy Hat and bought into the mission we’re trying to deal with,” he shared. Karras emphasized how organic this venture was, saying, “I didn’t set out to be a hat guy. That’s for sure. Or a public philanthropist. But I’m blessed with this opportunity.” He added that the energy and spirit of the city inspire him and fuel his aspirations for the team’s success.
A Noble Cause
The Cincy Hat Project directs all proceeds to the Village of Merici, an organization that provides essential services for adults with developmental disabilities. This commitment to community service has positioned Karras as one of the Bengals’ nominees for the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award in 2023. He joins a select group, being only the third player to receive multiple nominations, alongside Sam Hubbard and Carlos Dunlap. Karras acknowledged the significance of the award, aware of the many teammates also making impactful contributions. “It’s not like I was clamoring for it. But it really does help our organization a lot with just a monetary donation and visibility,” he stated.
Facing Off Against the Swifties
This year, Karras finds himself in a unique rivalry, as he competes against Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, who has gained significant attention due to his relationship with pop icon Taylor Swift. Karras humorously noted, “It’s going to be us vs. The Swifties for the fan vote,” acknowledging the formidable social media presence of Swift’s fans. Last year, Karras won the fan vote, securing an extra $35,000 for the Village of Merici, and he is eager to replicate that success.
An Emotional Moment
The announcement of his nomination took Karras by surprise. “I was actually not in the best mood,” he admitted, having just completed an intense practice session. His spirits lifted when he entered the media room to find his entire family waiting for him, turning the moment into an emotional celebration.
As the rivalry heats up, Karras remains focused on his mission while embracing the challenges ahead, intertwining sportsmanship with altruism in a way that resonates deeply with fans and community members alike.
