Steelers snub shocker: tackling machine Payton Wilson left off Pro Bowl roster despite breakout season

Steelers Pro Bowl Selections Highlight Snub of Payton Wilson

The Pittsburgh Steelers are set to send three players to the 2026 NFL Pro Bowl, a prestigious event celebrating the league’s elite talent. Veterans T.J. Watt and Jalen Ramsey are making their expected returns, while special teams standout Ben Skowronek is enjoying his first taste of Pro Bowl recognition. However, amid this mix of celebration, one glaring omission has left fans and analysts alike scratching their heads: inside linebacker Payton Wilson.

Wilson’s Breakout Season

Payton Wilson has emerged as a pivotal force within the Steelers’ defense, evolving into a reliable every-down linebacker. This season, he has not only marked his presence on the field but has also surpassed the significant milestone of 100 total tackles for the first time in his career. Despite these impressive statistics, he was noticeably absent from the AFC’s Pro Bowl roster, a decision that has drawn criticism.

The current landscape of the Pro Bowl selection process raises questions about its integrity. It often seems more a popularity contest than an accurate reflection of player performance. This reality might explain why Wilson, despite his standout season, was overlooked.

Tackling Machine in the Making

Entering training camp this summer, Wilson expressed his ambition to become the best pass-coverage linebacker in the NFL. While his tackling prowess has been undeniable, his pass coverage has room for improvement. This season, he has faced challenges, allowing an 85% completion rate when targeted, with only one interception and no additional pass breakups to his name.

Nonetheless, Wilson has firmly established himself as a tackling machine. Averaging 7.9 tackles per game, he has demonstrated an ability to find the ball and make impactful plays. His performance includes four games where he recorded double-digit tackles, showcasing his relentless work ethic and commitment to the Steelers’ defensive scheme.

As the Steelers gear up for the remainder of the season, the absence of Payton Wilson from the Pro Bowl roster serves as a reminder of the complexities within player recognition. His contributions on the field are undeniable, but whether they translate into accolades remains to be seen. The football community will undoubtedly be watching closely as Wilson continues to develop and strive for excellence in his craft.
