Steelers Promote Mark Robinson for Key Chargers Matchup
The Pittsburgh Steelers have made a strategic move ahead of their Week 10 showdown against the Los Angeles Chargers, promoting a familiar name from their practice squad. Linebacker Mark Robinson, who is set to make an impact this week, is back with the team after a brief absence.
Robinson’s Journey Back to Pittsburgh
Robinson, a seventh-round selection in the 2022 NFL Draft, has had an eventful year. Initially, he appeared in four games during his rookie season and continued to build on his experience by playing in all 34 regular-season contests for the Steelers in 2023 and 2024. Over that span, he recorded 36 tackles and forced three fumbles, showcasing his potential on both defense and special teams.
However, his journey took a turn when he was released in August during roster cuts while in the final year of his rookie contract. He subsequently joined the New England Patriots’ practice squad, where he played in three games and contributed three tackles while participating in 37 special teams snaps. The New York Jets then signed him to their active roster, where he logged 58 special teams snaps over three games before being waived on October 18. His free agency allowed him to return to Pittsburgh, where he hopes to make an immediate impact.
Opportunity Knocks Amid Injuries
With linebacker Cole Holcomb sidelined for the second consecutive game due to illness, Robinson’s promotion comes at a crucial time. Although the Steelers’ starting inside linebackers—Patrick Queen and Payton Wilson—remain healthy, Robinson’s role as a special teams specialist becomes vital. Holcomb’s contributions have been significant this season, as he has participated in 38 percent of the special teams snaps when available.
Robinson’s experience on special teams, where he has balanced his time effectively between kick coverage and return units, positions him well to step into this role. During his time with the Patriots and Jets, he recorded 26 snaps on kick coverage and 21 on returns, along with 25 snaps on punt coverage and 23 on returns, according to Pro Football Focus.
As the Steelers prepare to face the Chargers, the coaching staff will look to maximize Robinson’s skill set in special teams, ensuring the unit remains competitive despite Holcomb’s absence.
This elevation not only highlights Robinson’s resilience but also reflects the Steelers’ commitment to leveraging their depth as they navigate the challenges of the season. With the stakes high in this primetime matchup, fans will be watching closely to see how Robinson integrates back into the fold.
