Steelers Elevate James Pierre for Week 1 Showdown Against Jets

The Pittsburgh Steelers are bolstering their secondary as they prepare for a pivotal Week 1 matchup against the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium. In a strategic move to enhance their defensive depth, the team has elevated veteran cornerback James Pierre from the practice squad.

Pierre’s Role in the Defense

With a limited roster of just four cornerbacks—Jalen Ramsey, Darius Slay Jr., Joey Porter Jr., and Brandin Echols—Pittsburgh’s decision to bring Pierre into the fold makes perfect sense. Following the game, he will revert back to the practice squad, but the immediate need for added experience in the secondary is evident.

Pierre, 28, joins the ranks of three other defensive backs currently on the practice squad, including D’Shawn Jamison and Daryl Porter. His elevation comes as the Steelers aim to solidify their defense against a formidable Jets offense.

A Look at Pierre’s Career

Pierre has built a solid career since signing with the Steelers as an undrafted free agent in 2020. His collegiate tenure at Florida Atlantic saw him participate in 39 games over three seasons, where he amassed 120 tackles, 15 passes defended, and three interceptions.

His rookie season was a promising one, as he played in all 16 games, recording 10 tackles. The following year, he took on a larger role, starting four of 17 games and compiling 47 tackles, along with three forced fumbles and an interception.

Over the past two seasons, Pierre has appeared in 33 games, contributing 37 tackles to the Steelers’ defense. After a brief stint with the Washington Commanders in March 2024, where he was cut during final roster evaluations, Pierre returned to the Steelers via their practice squad in September.

Expectations for the Season Ahead

In the 2024 season, Pierre made an impact by starting two games and participating in 15 overall, with 23 tackles, three passes defended, two forced fumbles, and one interception to his name. This offseason, he re-signed with the Steelers on a one-year deal, hoping to make a significant contribution as the season unfolds.

As the Steelers gear up for their first game against the Jets, Pierre’s experience and versatility will be crucial. His presence on the field could provide the necessary support in a game that sets the tone for the rest of the season. The Steelers are counting on him to step up and deliver when it matters most.
