Steelers Face Defensive Dilemma from Highsmith’s Ankle Injury
Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker Alex Highsmith has found himself on the injury report ahead of an important matchup against the Seattle Seahawks. This latest development raises concerns for a team already grappling with defensive challenges.
Highsmith, who has been a standout performer, was listed as a limited participant in practice due to an ankle injury. While he was not given a game designation and is expected to play, the timing of this injury is troubling. The 28-year-old had been a full participant in practice throughout the week leading up to the Steelers’ Week 2 home opener at Acrisure Stadium.
A Strong Start for Highsmith
In the season opener against the New York Jets, Highsmith demonstrated his significant value to the Steelers’ defensive unit. He logged 57 defensive snaps, contributed eight tackles, recorded a sack, and generated eight pressures, showcasing his ability to impact the game. His performance was a bright spot amid a demanding start to the season.
However, Highsmith’s injury history adds a layer of concern. During training camp, he battled through a groin injury that sidelined him for several weeks, although he managed to return in time for the regular season. Last season, Highsmith missed three games due to a separate groin issue and an ankle problem but has remained active throughout his first three years in the NFL since being drafted in the third round in 2020.
Injury Impact on Steelers’ Defense
The Steelers’ defensive unit is already contending with multiple injuries. First-round rookie defensive lineman Derrick Harmon has been unavailable since the preseason finale due to an MCL sprain. Additionally, safety DeShon Elliott suffered a similar injury during the game against the Jets, which will keep him out against Seattle. Cornerback Joey Porter Jr. is also ruled out for the matchup due to a hamstring injury.
Despite these setbacks, there is a silver lining. Nick Herbig has made a recovery and is off the injury report, preparing to make his debut in Week 2 after missing the previous game with a hamstring issue. However, the situation has worsened for linebacker Malik Harrison, who was placed on injured reserve following a knee injury sustained against New York, further depleting the team’s depth at the edge rusher position.
As the Steelers gear up for their clash with the Seahawks, the health of Highsmith and the other defensive players will be crucial. The team must navigate these injury challenges carefully to maintain their competitiveness in the early stages of the season.
