Steelers prepare for Bills pass rush without Broderick Jones

PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Steelers are gearing up for a challenging Week 13 matchup against the formidable Buffalo Bills pass rush, but they will do so without starting left tackle Broderick Jones. Head coach Mike Tomlin confirmed at his weekly press conference that Jones, who sustained a neck injury during the recent loss to the Chicago Bears, has been officially ruled out for this crucial game.

Navigating the depth chart

In Jones’s absence, the Steelers have developed a strategy to fill the left tackle position. Tomlin elaborated on the competition between backups Calvin Anderson and Andrus Peat, both of whom will vie for playing time this week.

“We like both guys. Both guys are veteran professionals who bring a certain level of preparedness and maturity to work every day,” Tomlin remarked. “We’re going to prepare both guys and will have more clarity as we get closer to game time.”

Anderson’s experience under pressure

Anderson, who suited up as a backup lineman during the game against the Bears, stepped up to replace the injured Jones in the second half. At 29 years old, he has the experience and versatility that the Steelers value. Tomlin expressed confidence in Anderson’s abilities, noting, “We feel really comfortable with what Calvin has given us. He’s been that guy that’s a swing tackle and he’s shown really good capabilities in that area.”

Peat’s potential impact

While Anderson appears poised to take the lead role, Tomlin also highlighted the potential that Peat brings to the table. Once a Pro Bowl left guard, Peat has transitioned into a versatile lineman capable of covering multiple positions. “There’s a guy that has a resume,” Tomlin praised. “He started wire-to-wire and came into this league as a first-rounder. So, certainly, he has a different profile than Calvin.”

With Anderson’s active participation in every game this season, and his prior experience stepping in for Jones, he is likely the frontrunner for the starting left tackle position. However, Tomlin has made it clear that both players will receive opportunities to compete for the role as the team prepares for the Bills.

A strategic approach to adversity

The Steelers face a significant challenge as they adjust to the absence of a key player. While the situation may not be ideal, Tomlin’s strategic planning and the depth of talent within the roster provide a sense of reassurance heading into the high-stakes battle against Buffalo. The Steelers are determined to adapt and make the most of their circumstances, showcasing resilience in the face of adversity.
