Steelers Seek Wide Receiver Reinforcements Ahead of Trade Deadline
The Pittsburgh Steelers find themselves in need of wide receiver help, a concern that has lingered since the start of the 2024 season. The recent acquisition of DK Metcalf was expected to address their offensive issues, yet the unexpected trade of George Pickens has left them without a solid No. 2 receiver. With the trade deadline approaching, all eyes are on the Steelers as they explore potential reinforcements.
Trade Deadline Watch
ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler has highlighted the Steelers as a team to watch as the deadline looms. Both Fowler and colleague Dan Graziano identified six wide receivers who could be available to Pittsburgh. The list features notable names: Jakobi Meyers from the Las Vegas Raiders, Chris Olave and Rashid Shaheed of the New Orleans Saints, Tyreek Hill of the Miami Dolphins, Calvin Ridley from the Tennessee Titans, and Curtis Samuel of the Buffalo Bills.
Fowler suggested, “The Steelers could have one more move in them, and I’d be willing to bet they’d at least have a conversation on Tyreek Hill if Miami engaged.” He also pointed out that Curtis Samuel remains on the sidelines in Buffalo, despite a hefty salary of $7.4 million this season.
Offensive and Defensive Considerations
Interestingly, Graziano indicated that while the Steelers may look to enhance their wide receiver corps, a mid-season move may also focus on bolstering their struggling defense. He noted the situation regarding Jakobi Meyers, who expressed a desire for a new contract from the Raiders earlier in the offseason and subsequently requested a trade when those discussions stalled. If Las Vegas fails to contend, Meyers could emerge as an asset for a team looking to make a playoff push.
Graziano further elaborated on the New Orleans Saints’ position, stating, “The Saints don’t look as if they’re going anywhere this season, and they have Rashid Shaheed on an expiring contract and Chris Olave with one year left on his deal.” He raised the question of whether the Saints’ new coaching staff might consider making either or both players available.
The Intrigue of Potential Targets
Among the potential targets, Ridley, Olave, Hill, and Meyers stand out as game-changers with proven track records. However, the Steelers may want to exercise caution with some of these players. Injuries and off-field issues could complicate matters. Hill, for instance, is currently under scrutiny due to domestic violence allegations, which could lead to disciplinary action from the NFL. Olave, meanwhile, has a concerning history of concussions that raises questions about his long-term viability.
In contrast, Meyers presents a more appealing option. Known for his consistency and reliability, he would be a valuable No. 2 receiver alongside Metcalf, enhancing the Steelers’ offensive capabilities.
Looking Ahead
As the Steelers navigate the trade landscape, their decision-making will be critical. With a win-now mentality, the focus will be on finding a player who can not only fill the immediate void but also contribute significantly as the season progresses. The next few weeks will be pivotal in shaping the Steelers’ roster and their push for a successful campaign.
